I've got a guy with a thousand-year-old rider. The fuel line is routed right across the top of the muffler. The guy put a new in-line fuel filter within 3/4 inch of the muffler and it gets very hot. Can the heat cause a vapor lock in the filter? The fuel will come into the filter if you put your hand over the barrel of the carb, but runs out and doesn't replenish itself if you don't. I told him I don't think the carb is acting up because the engine is running so well. It's an 8 HP Briggs on a rear engine Lawnboy rider.

Don't know what actual effect it will have, but I'd say it's bad practice.
The larger area of the filter can absorb a lot more heat than a relatively "skinny" fuel line.
I would also think the "skinny" fuel line could effectively be routed further away from the muffler.
I'm not exactly sure what the the formula is for radiant heat transfer, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the square of the distance. IOW if the object is twice as far away from the heat source, it gets 1/4 the heat energy. 3 times = 1/9 etc.???
