Lattitude D810 Touchpad Buttons/Keyboard Problems

I bought a used D810 over 9 months ago off Ebay. After having it I had two problems. One is name Sammi. The other one Sasha. They are two black cats I take care of. The seemed to think the keyboard was a good springboard for jumping into the window behind the laptop. Almost immediately my touchpad and keyboard were quirky. Here is what happens: I will be on a website using the up and down arrow keyboard keys to scroll. Then the arrow keys no longer work for scrolling. At that point, if I go to my Icons on my desktop and left click on them, the programs will no longer open, but display the Properties window. When it gets really bad I can no longer left click on start to get to Turn Off Computer. I will press the power button. Sometimes it will power down, at other times it says it is going to put the computer to sleep. These are just a few of the changes that have happened.

Here is what I have tried:

Un-install and Re-install the Alps Touchpad driver (this helps only temporarily)

Reinstalled XP Pro after wiping hard drive. (Soon after all drivers installed this

I could not finish this post. I was typing t for (the problems returned.) and when I pressed t the Tools menu would drop down. I had to reboot to type the rest of this post.

It's possible the keyboard is on the fritz. Seeing I suggest to remove the keyboard then re-seat the keyboard & track pad connectors onto their proper connectors. While you're in there, blow out any dust & hair.

If it were me, I'd probably just start off with a new keyboard as I could possibly see that causing your touchpad issues. They are very easy to install, and can be found for cheap. As cheap as $10 for a new oem keyboard, or for a new 3rd party one. Personally I'd stick to oem dell, even if you have to go used.

Thanks. I think I will get a new one after trying T&S's suggestion. Umm, does anyone want a few nice black cats? Actually, they are doing better avoiding the keyboard.

I will look up instructions on Dell's website. Are there tips for removing the keyboard? It will be my first laptop keyboard I have removed.

It's pretty easy. The bezel above the keyboard comes off with a flat tipped screw driver, then there are about 4 tiny screws to remove. Use a magnetic screwdriver so not to lose those tiny screws.

Search youtube, amazing amount of good help videos there.

Keyboard removed and reseated. Blew out a little dust. One thing I have never seen before. A couple of chips on RAM seemed to have a rusty formation. Air blew it off. Computer running better than ever. I cleaned the back metal part of keyboard that seemed to be the source of the residue. Maybe I won't be able to blame the cats for this after all. Time will tell. Actually only two screws. Google search. Second hit was Dell manual/instructions. Figured out bezel removal with small screw driver on my own. I did this before you replied. Reminds me of my Saturn. Very nice layout for servicing some things. Anyway, still have the same problem. Ordered keyboard posted in link above. If you don't hear from my then problem was taken care of.

I think you'll be taken care of with a new keyboard.

They are not as robust on laptops like your standard PC keyboard that lasts 20 years.

BTW that is probably one of the most common laptops ever. Everywhere I go I see D810's. If you need a backlight bulb for your LCD ever just PM me

Thanks. So far, no backlight problems.

I was reflecting on the force exerted on the keyboard by a 13 lb cat jumping 2 1/2 feet to the window from the keyboard. I imagine Dell did not consider that scenario when designing the keyboard.

LOL! Yes, I have to agree that Dell didn't include a 'feline test' as part of it's testing. lol

Isn't the Lattitude Dell's business laptop line?

And Dell put an ALPS touchpad on those?

Yes, ALPS. That is what confused me in diagnosing the problem. There were a lot of posts/complaints about ALPS touch pad. Anyway, I really like this laptop. It was the keyboard. Has not skipped a beat since installing the new one. I'm not sure what I am missing since it has an ALPS touch pad? Like the pointing stick and extra pointing stick buttons. Laptop runs very cool and quick for its age.
