Mechtech, in the dark, pupils will dilate to around 7 mm and a bit more in some people. This is the reason why you always want to buy binoculars with an exit pupil of at least 7 mm. That's especially important in low light situations. If your pupil widens more than the width of the exit pupil of the binoculars, you lose not only light, but viewing becomes seriously impaired.

Anecdote: I have allergies and use frequently oxymetazoline hydrochloride eyedrops. It's happened that I've used them too much, and that results in the pupils dilating to max even in bright light, which

A: is scary like **** for others to see
B: might get you booked for DUI
C: reduces vision greatly due to a loss of depth of field

Go easy on the (medicated) eyedrops, boys!

Had Lasik 4 years ago. My surgeon was in a field study program for getting CustomVue approval from the FDA. I was a perfect candidate because my astigmatism was fairly steep. I was taken from 20/80 right/ 20/90 left with some wacky axis readings to 20/10 right (my shootin' eye

) and 20/15 left. Still hold these ratings. No halos, no starbursts, no pain, no problems, no dry eye. Absolute best $$$ money spent, was truly life changing. Do it!
