Also Groucho, you need to weigh your "druthers".....I'm not actively looking but I got an email for from a small-medium company trying to bring me in. I knew a little about there "services" but not much about the owner....turns out this guy is a nut job, in the not positive sense. I'll take my medium-medium company any day.

Groucho -

Try being in government. I'm military but had the misfortune of working with some civilian employees that were horrible. One lady showed up and immediately filed complaints against everyone around her. A real sociopath...and worse she had no actual skills. She was a transfer from another agency and embellished her resume/skill sets a bit. By getting her complaints in first, she made any efforts to hold her accountable for lack of performance seem like 'reprisal'. The supposed human resources experts were useless in helping us deal with it. What we needed was a psych eval...which I'm sure would be an illegal violation of her rights.

Should have checked her out more closely before hiring; however, my guess is that her previous bosses would have told us she was great just to get rid of her. After a year or so she left us (with a raise in grade) to go to another agency and start the cycle all over again.

Not getting her canned was the biggest failure of my career for sure...but thruth be told I'm just happy I never have to see her face EVER AGAIN.

Wow - that's actually a useful law!! In WA state we have a law....if you lie on your resumé (and get caught) you will get fined! But a boss can pump some loser up......but really in a private company, people know.

It's one of the few new ones that I agree with.

There's been a history in Oz of "you can resign or get fired...if you resign. I'll give you a glowing reference.". People are still offered the choice, but not the reference.

That's sort of an unspoken thing here too AFAIK. But the worser trend is: Even if you leave on your own for another job, or are laid off for a lack of work (RIF) - company no longer provides anything more than employment dates. So you could have been an A++ employee for 10 years and they still won't say it. (Reason? lawyer suits) So what does THIS lead to? Boss calling Boss from other company trying to get dirt.........
