I may have to zip out of town for a day or two. Heading into California's Central Vally. There's a deal avaialable for a room at the La Quinta in Tulare, which is convenient to my destination. I've never stayed at a La Quinta (that I can recall). Are they a decent place to stay. I don't need or want fancy, but clean, comfortable, and some amenities would be appreciated.

What's the feeling here about La Quinta i general, at at La Quinta in Tulare if anyone is familiar with the place?

Good enough for Peter Lynch good enough for me, though wyndham acquired them some years ago. I've stayed at 8 or 9 of them over my travels and it's pretty good as they've always been very clean and well kept and have a small but good breakfast to get you to lunch which is always nice. But others budget hotels ones have also gotten their act together as social media is a thing and bad publicity spreads like wildfire.

I have stayed at a few La Quinta Inns and they all seem to be 2-3 star properties. Each one has been clean, but very basic; however, a step up from a Super 8 type hotel. Somewhat comparable to a Best Western or Comfort Inn, but without the cigarette smells. Be aware that nearly all La Quinta Inns are pet friendly; hence, many travelers bring their dogs. The complementary breakfast is nothing to write home about.

They're almost all operated by franchisees and aren't the most expensive properties. So much depends on the particular operator. I remember my mom was staying at one on business and complained about the place, but other locations might be much better.

It wouldn't be like Hilton or Marriott where the standard is really high and even though some locations are below average, that should still be pretty good.

I've been on a few cross-country trips over the last year. Stayed in a few LQs. Some have been a decent place for a good price. A few have been disappointing. But that's true of many brands these days.

I highly recommend checking your favorite rating site (tripadvisor, etc) and seeing how the options stack up.

Mediocre at best 2nd life hotels, meaning it was a 1st rate Marriott or whatever 10 years ago, then the owners would not do what it takes to refurb, keep it up etc. Owner switches to a lower standard franchise. Dead giveaways: old tub with a curtain and 10 years worth of caulk and/or bath fitters style insert. The mechanics and HVAC will be lower end (Noise and a little janky). Low/dark/narrow hallways. A good bit of patina on most stuff. You get the idea.

There is better to be had for the almost the same $. (Avoid Fairfield Inn and Sheraton). Aloft is my go-to.

Asterick: LaQuita does allow small pets. That's why my parents stayed there. Not sure if that's your bag? Might also be a negative.

I only stayed in one once, in Manchester New Hampshire.

My stay entitled me to Amtrak points. The people at check in had no idea of how to code in my stay to earn me the points.

The room was full of cobwebs. They had not given the place a good dusting in a long time.

We were supposed to get a hot breakfast. The person who prepares hot breakfast didn't come to work that day, so all we had was coffee, toast and cold cereal.

I have never stayed in another one.

I have had poor experiences in other hotels run by other companies. When I reported their shortcomings to management, they usually comped me with a free stay or refunded my night's rental. LaQuinta did not even acknowledge receiving my report.

I had some pretty good stays at Fairfield Inn. One was kind of weird because of a promotion that wasn't honored (said it was a problem with their corporate reservation sytem offering the promotion incorrectly), but the manager made it right by dropping the price of the room. Another time the room was quite nice, other than it had a 30+ year old 5 gallon toilet. It took forever to fill up (when there was a line to go), would occasionally clog, and just plain wasted water. A modern low gpf toilet would have made so much sense. The breakfast was decent at one, but more a continental breakfast at another.

I've stayed in so many hotels and motels all over the country, it's hard to remember specific ones. I'll just say cheap places can be great, and expensive places can be a nightmare. My best advice is to check reviews of the particular place you're considering staying, before deciding.
And leave reviews as well
I always do...straight up honest ones.

I've stayed at a few, never had a problem. Well staffed with a decent breakfast. I think it depends more on where you're staying.

Completely mixed by location. My findings are price of hotel acts as partial filter for fellow guests.

Staying in La Quintas often in Springfield Ma(daughter’s tennis team) and somewhere in CA. Variable.
