I do here people saying the same thing("best tire they have ever owned"). How are the Solus KR-21's in the snow/ice?

I loved them as well at first because I thought I was getting a great deal on a 80,000 mile tire. Turned out I was buying a 40,000 mile tire. not such a great deal.


How often did you rotate them? I rotate mine every 5K miles. I now have 45K on them and they look like they'll easily last the full 80K. There's plenty of tread left on them.



I took the car in to Discount Tire at aprox 7500 mile intervals. I did it enough for them to honor the warranty. The replacement set will get the same treatment. We'll see how long they will last.
 
Well, there is still time as we're not replacing the Dunlop Signatures til, hmmm, October-ish. Maybe our choice will change or a better deal will come up. Right now, I can get the Kumho Solus KR-21's from treadepot.com shipped to my door for $329.00 + $52.00 tax and all for mounting/balancing/tire disposal at W*M...$381.00 total.

We're looking at $570-$590(roughly $200 more) at any local tire store in my area for the same tires(KR-21's) installed. The only extras we'll be getting from the local(s) is lifetime flat repair, tire rotation & Road Hazard Warranty. With my daughter being on the road as much as she is for her job, should she have a blowout or need to replace a tire, what is the likelyness that she'll be anywhere near any of the local shops where she purchaced the tire in the first place. Chances are, like most people who have purchaced RHW, she will be at the mercey of the closest tire store for a replacement tire(as close a tire as they can match whats on the car). This is the reason I have never in my 38 years of buying tires, purchaced road hazard warranty(unles it came w/pkg). With all of the money I haven't spent on RHW's, if I have to eat one/two tires in my life, so be it! I haven't yet!

This tires are GARBAGE! Had good luck with KH16's on my '97 altima, so I bought the KR21s for my wifes altima, and they simply stink! Awful wet/snow traction. One rear tire developed a bubble on the side wall, like an impact break, but wife swears never hit anything. Fronts vibrate badly (with only 18k miles on them) and I did rotate them every 7k mi, had to be rebalanced twice, and no, it isn't a rim problem. 80k mi rating is a joke, as mine are 75% worn already. My cousin has them also on his '04 cavalier, and one tire exploded for no obvious reason at only 50mph, with only 8k miles on it. No more Kumhos for me. Yoko TRZs are next.

These comments too are what Im looking for. The largest reason right now that I wouldn't get the KR-21's would be that they wareout too soon(30,000-40,000 miles). Low miles more than the problems that others experience will be the reason I move away from the KR-21's. Im looking for my daughter! I don't want to spend $400.00 + for a 40,000 mile tire even if they rate well. If Im buying an 80,000 mile tire, I want to get 65-70000 out of it comfortably.

I got 17,000 miles out of 60,000 mile Continentals ContiProContact with rotations...This just ain't happenin!
 
My mistake! The Conti's were TouringContact(OEM). I don't want others jumping all over me for mentioning the wrong tire.

I'd say the people having issues with these tires are more the exception than the rule. I'd also say if you're not getting the rated mileage from these tires, then there's probably something wrong with the vehicle (like it needs an alignment), or the tires are being used while improperly inflated. My KR-21s now have about 50K on them and they look like they'll easiely last the rated 80K.
 
I was only able to get 17,000 miles out of my OEM Continental's on my new at the time, 04 Altima. I think it was the Continental's as they get terrable reviews(mine wore evenly across the tread, they just wore fast even while rotating). The Pirelli P4 "T" that Im using now only have 6-7000 mile on them and they still look great of course but, time will tell. I have 17" wheels/tires for "summer use only" and with 21,000 miles on them, they don't look all that great for ware... even across the tread but, waring fast(Eagle LS's "T") rated at aprox 40,000 miles. Could be these types of tires. I always try to stay with "T" rated tires instead of "H" just for the little extra ware at a little lesser price. Handling with "T's" is enough for me for as hard as Im going to push a car. Could be the firm suspension as I have noticed that vehicles with firmer susspensions do ware down their tires sooner than vehicles with softer suspensions. Just my experience! im not ruling out any of the tires mentioned here through out my OP. There is still time. I want to get my daughter into something really good at a really good price as she uses her car for her job. Mid/Late Fall is the time frame, I just want to start looking/pricing/reviewing now!
 
Discount Tire replaced mine under warranty. I am sure if they thought it had an alignment issue they would have mentioned it. I suspect that they may well do better on lighter cars. But my first set were worn out before 40,000 miles across the tread of all 4. Mine were not the first that that particular location of Discount Tire had replaced.
 
Wife got about 65k mi out of the OEM Contis on her '06 Altyma. There is nothing wrong with the car, had the alignment checked. Forgot to mention, two of them (KR21s) won't hold air for long, rims and valve stems are good. I hate this tires! I'm glad most of you have good luck with them.

02-04 Altima 2.5 standard tire was 205-65-16 ContinentalTouringContact as OEM. The 05-06 used 215-60-16 ContinentalProContact as OEM(I beleive the 3.5 V6 Altima's 215-55-17 remained the same). I can't really explain the differences beyond that

Was it determined that there was a week spot in the tire that caused it to just fail? I have had tires blow out but there was always a reason. It didn't just blow! Must have hit something sharp in the road that your cousin couldn't explain nor find(glass, sharp stone, piece of metal). When the tire blew, it must have blown the object out of sight or by the time your cousin had stopped the car, he/she was too far down the road to determine which object was the culprit.
