This is a G2000 gas with about 3000 hrs.

It's liquid cooled and last I knew it ran like a champ and is super quiet. A family friend is offering to sell his for a song, but he believes it needs a new starter. He replaced the ignition switch with no dice and now it won't start with even a jump. He's just done with messing with it.

Basically, nothing is happening when the key is turned. Can anyone think of any other possibilities?

See if there is 12V (6V?) at the starter when the switch is turned.

"No Crank" is battery, starter, wiring, or solenoid. A very simple system to troubleshoot and fix.

"Cranks over easily but no fire" is often far, far more complex to repair!

There are a lot of possibilities. What you really need to do is start using your electrical tester and follow the wiring. You'll learn a lot more by troubleshooting it rather than someone just handing you an answer.

How can I trouble shoot something I don't have?

Everyone else, thanks for the replies.

It's definitely worth considering.

If the price is right, I wouldn't be scared of buying it. Some work with a test light or meter should give you the answer. Look power at the solenoid, then work backwards- look at fuses, then power through any safety interlocks and you should come up with an answer.

Keep in mind that 3000 hours are pretty high for a lawn tractor. Take a good look at everything.

This is like saying 250,000 miles is a lot of miles for a 4Runner.

It's a Kubota gas engine.

Ah, gotcha. So it's an older G2000. It's been years since I've seen one, but those inline 3cyl Kubota gas engines a strong, heavy-duty suckers as you could imagine. Heavy blocks, cranks, rods, heads, etc, just like the diesels. I've seen them with 4-5K hours on them. Bad thing is they burn a lot of fuel.

Need more info on the no start...

I haven't even had a chance to look at it yet. All i know is that there's no crank even with a jump. Hopefully this weekend our schedules align.

We have a G1800 (same tractor, deck size, 4 wheel steering, basically it's diesel brother. Only 650 hrs.) that we should be able to steal the battery and perhaps the starter from.

As far as fuel consumption, I really have no idea how bad it'll be. I can mow a little under 4 acres almost 3 times with 1 tank of diesel. The gasser would be used to mow a small lot weekly/ bi weekly so it shouldn't be too bad. By the time trailering the diesel 50 miles 1 way is taken into account (as well as all the fiddling involved with that), it shouldn't be bad at all. Lol.

If you can get it for a song, I'd get it regardless. That's a heck of a machine. Could be as simple as a solenoid. Have to poke around to see.

Brought it home today. Nothing happened when the key was turned.

We put a good battery on it and the dash lit up, but still no start. We then used a starter from another tractor. Still nothing.

Sounds like a battery connection issue to me.

I was able to get it to click a few times this evening, but that was it. With the key off, the starter is getting 12.6 volts. Once I turn the ignition to "on", the starter is only getting about 3.5 volts. Should this be happening?

Key on and you get 3.5v? Do you mean key in start?

If what you said is in fact correct, then you've got a bad connection somewhere, so when you turn the key "on" which draws current, the connection can't support the load and the circuit voltage goes away. Definitely look over all cable connections + any ancillary positive or negative wires coming from the battery.

Yes ignition to on as opposed in the start position. The dash lights up and the fuel pump turns on.

The positive battery cable looks a bit questionable so I'll switch that out with another tractors and go from there.

It was the positive battery cable.

Dad and I tried bypassing it Saturday by just applying jumper cables to the terminal (which was connected to the battery) and the starter with no luck. I got to thinking today and figured I'd try it again except remove the cable entirely and hook up to the clean battery post. Boom. Fired right up.

I lied in an earlier post too btw. She only has 1300 hrs.
