Has anyone cut open a Kohler 12 050 01s oil filter yet? Pictures? Quality vs the 52 050 02s filter?

Is this the one with the drain back valve or without.

The lack of a drain back valve in the case of the courage engine is rather important. It does not have splash lube, and the oil pump is rather small. It takes too much time to fill the filter, and eventually you can throw a rod. The instructions state to fill the fitter because it takes too long to fill from the pump. It is quite diffucult to completely fill a filter with the drain back valve unless you use a toothpick or something to hold it open.

You can use Fram 3614 sized auto filters as a replacement.
Three and a half inches long...

You can also use Fram 3600 sized replacements if there is room.
Five inches long...

RockAuto has several filters for $1 - $2...

I just decided to go with a wix 51348. Around the same price as Oem but built way better. Huge inlet holes, bypass at the bottom and silicone adbv

The Champ Labs made Kohler pictured has a thick baseplate and is not a bad filter. You could also use a Toyota filter 90915 yzzd1.
How does the Kohler engine report oil pressure, by gauge or red warning light?

It's from the late 90s so neither? Lol

AFAIK, Kohlers don't have the same low oil shutdown as Honda and their clones.

Any pressurized oil system for the bearings should have a warning or gauge of some sort. I would think Small engines are sometimes made with splash lube and a separate oil circuit for the filter. They have a small oil pump. Those wouldn't need a pressure warning alert. Which pressurized engines have no warning about low oil pressure? Another question, how does splash lube get to the ohv parts?

As long as the engine generates enough pressure - which they do - 25-45PSI - on all OPE engines I have attached Oil Pressure gauges to - to overcome the bypass on the filter (should it ever become necessary) there is no problem....these are small single or (most often) 2-cylinder motors that dont have big lubrication requirements for their ~3600RPM rated speeds.

If anything - I would be more worried about filling a too fine filter media (automotive -maybe) too quickly with the nasty to open the bypass than anything else.

Even though I owned a VW air cooled once, I had to look up if it had a warning for low oil pressure. It did. If an engine actually has pressurized bearings and not just a pressurized filter loop it should have an oil pressure warning of some sort. Otherwise how would one know oil pressure is failing? Knocking?

Lots of small engines (OHV or otherwise) used in mowers, power washers, etc that have an oil pump have no oil pressure indicator or warning system. They may have a low oil level sensor that will cut ignition if the oil level gets too low and could cause engine damage.

Do they? That was the point of my post. I'm sure everyone here knows oil level and oil pressure are different things. The vw air cooled has an oil pressure warning, which was what sparked my interest. Small engines do have oil filters but some on a loop only to filter the oil.
So my question is are there any that have pressurized bearings that do not have an oil pressure warning? With facts. t seems they would be derelict in their duty if they didn't.

Yes they do, go do some resrarch. My pressure washer with a 5 HP OHV Honda engine has an oil pump to pressurize and feed the oiling system, and no oil pressure read-out or low oil pressure warning. And I never said or eluded to that a low oil level warning/cut-off is the same thing.

I have a large Dewalt pressure washer with a more than 5 hp Honda, no oil filter. 7 hp Honda rototiller splash lube no oil filter. They have larger engines that do have oil pressure. I am only interested in the ideas not combat. There are small engines with oil filters with splash lube. So I think people might misinterpret seeing an oil filter.. Most small Hondas are splash. My point was it seems odd bearings are pressurized but no warning if there is low oil pressure. Nothing wrong with that thinking. You chose as usual to make it , and turn it, into something else. Bye. Good luck. Etc

^^^ LoL, I'm just telling you there are lots of small engines with oil pumps and a pressurized oiling system that don't have a low oil pressure warning of any kind. Seems you don't want to believe that fact.

I've got a Yamaha motorcycle with a 900cc 115 hp motor that doesn't have a low oil pressure warning, only a low oil level warning. Designs vary all over the place, go figure.

Makes sense they wouldn't put a low oil pressure sensor on a cheap 5-20 HP engine used in a pressure washer, lawn mower, etc.
