Pulled apart a 7000 series because it was using excessive oil. Found out the rings needed to be replaced. Figured I might as well order new seals while it’s apart. When I pulled the crank I noticed some galling on the flywheel side of the crank. Wondering if there is anything I should do or just run it like this. It definitely isn’t the worst I’ve seen. Should I lightly hone the main with a brake cylinder hone or just leave it as is? There was no oil leakage on the outside of the engine up by the flywheel.

It might have. When it started giving off white smoke, I constantly added oil before each use. I had replaced the head gaskets about a year ago so I knew that wasn't the problem. But yeah, it probably ran low on oil before I caught it.

A few questions.
What Oil were you using?
What was the Weight of the Oil?
How many hours are on this Engine?
Is this Engine on the Front or Rear of your Mower?
At how many hours was the Oil Changed?
Did you blow the Mower off after each time it was used?
How often was the Fuel Filter changed?
How often was the Air Filter changed?
Has the Spark Plugs been changed?

Using FRAM 15w-40. Coldest it gets when I use the mower is about 60•F middle of summer upwards of 100•F
I change the oil before the start of each summer along with filters bought the mower from someone who has a lawn business so it has high hours, currently 747h. He thought it had seized up but the starter gear was stuck so it was a pretty good buy. It did smoke when I got it so I replaced the head gaskets, they were both bad. Rear mount engine. Blow the motor, deck and belt assembly out after each use. Usually clean pre filter reach month.

The main question is, should I run it as is? Or should I go over the shaft with a little bit of Emery cloth, lightly hone the main with a brake cylinder hone?

I'm not really encouraged by it, but you could probably Scotch Brite the crank and block and get many more hours out of it. Definitely make sure that it doesn't run low in the future and continue to run 15w40 or 15w50

Can you feel any groove or abrasion with your nail across those wear lines or is it smooth to the touch?

If it’s smooth, I would just lightly polish it and the journal surface and seal it back up. The fact that it wasn’t leaking through there is a good sign so no need to fix what wasn’t broken so to speak. Also as mentioned, 15w-40 or higher and keep it on the full mark.

Not that the brand really matters for OPE oil but if you want a dirt cheap full-synth HDEO, Wally Worlds 15w-40 is priced very nice.

I bought a gallon of this and will be using once my stash of T5 15w-40 has been used.
