I'm considering purchasing a used 2014 Focus for my daughter. I've heard about all the auto trans issues, so, I'm looking at a manual 5 speed. Are there any other known issues with the Focus. You guys alway seem to have some insight into vehicle issues that I can't seem to find anywhere else on line. Thanks in advance for any advice. Please don't recommend other car options as I'm stuck with Ford for various reasons.

The5 speed manual transmission in those has been around forever - I think the MTX-75 transmission was first used in the 90s. There's some issues where they will chatter at idle with the clutch out when hot, but that's something they all do and doesn't affect longevity.

Eh, there were a lot of "issues" with that car.

Started with a loose nut behind the wheel.

My 2012 has been solid except for the dual-clutch automatic (one of Ford's worst blunders, ever). Fuel economy, handling, highway performance are superior, assembly quality is pretty good, etc. The engine is DI but doesn't seem to suffer fuel dilution or intake valve deposit issues.

Go for the 5 speed but avoid the DCT.

Yeah ram_man on here had a 2014 Focus 5 speed. Had issues with strut mounts and A/C issues. Lots of other problems too but sometimes you just come across a lemon.

Use the manual transmission fluid that Ford specs, it works for this transmission.

Yes!

The Ford manual transmission lube is popular for a lot of groups too. I believe mine needs strut mounts at 62000 miles. My car has had a hard life, though.

I have said it a few times - but I do not care for the awkward gearing on the mtx75 ... but I believe it is better with the TI-VCT engine

Great car . Mine had the infotainment system replaced under warranty. Had it for 90,000 trouble free miles besides that. Nice power and handling for a econo box.

I have driven many stick shift vehicles and I do find the MTX-75 to require a bit more thought on take-off.
It needs a little gas simultaneously with clutch release (more co-ordination than others) to get a smooth take-off from stand still....after that it's as smooth as any I've ever driven.

First gear is too tall. Always been my complaint. But people seem to get 150k out of them. I can take off without killing the clutch while towing my popup.

Guess I'm used to trucks where you can take off up a hill without giving any gas; just let the clutch out in 1st gear and it moves

I like the MTX75, seems pretty solid overall, and I like the closer ratios.
It seems the 2014 has the same 1st ratio as my 2007 and Miller88's 2008, but final ratio is in between the two.
So it won't launch quite as easy as mine, but not as hard as Miller88's.
The dual mass flywheel does help a bit, but it makes a clutch replacement more expensive too. I guess like any manual trans, it should last if your daughter has good shifting habits.

I'm happy with mine other than the few issues I've had with the DCT. It's still not my favcorite transmission, and I wouldn't pick it over a regular automatic, but they've gotten it dialed in pretty well, and once you know how to drive it most effectively (feather the throttle a bit on takeoff, same as with a manual) it's perfectly serviceable. I haven't had any other reliability issues either, it's been rock solid other than the couple of Trans related issues.
