Allrighty - just to be a devils advocate here...
First a little background - I have a B. S. degree in Marine Biology and love the ocean and its creatures. I always thought it funny when one of my professors called whales "charismatic megafauna" during our classes. Yes they are wonderful creatures, and I love seeing whales and dolphins in the water when I'm surfing...
...BUT, why do we treat animals so differently? We harvest and eat fish without worry, but if someone kills a whale or dolphin its near sinful!!! I believe it comes down to how human-like we consider these animals. Dolphins have the largest brains for their size of any mammal. So is it wrong to kill smarter animals? Is it wrong to kill beautiful animals? Ever smashed a bug? Why do we make the distinction? Imagine if this was applied to people? (well it seems that the only missing child cases we hear of are beautiful white girls, while thousands of others are missing daily)
Just stirring the pot...
