Living hard catches up early.
He made it to 70 and lived the life he wanted with few compromises. There are plenty of people out there who would prefer that over 40 years of soul-crushing corporate paper pushing and making it to 90.
Quality vs quantity is highly dependent upon your personal perspective. I doubt Lemmy would have changed much to gain more miles on the odometer.

The music and the person cannot be separated. Many great musicians (and other artists) have/had substance "issues". Some of them don't live very long due to them (Kurt Cobain, Jimi, Layne Staley, etc), some of them do (Keith Richards, Lemmy). It's not exactly a cause and effect situation but suffice it to say their art wouldn't be the same without the vices.
