I'm using a K&N Air Filter on both my Pathfinder and Tribute and got similar silicon reports. Is it the area I live in? Should I clean them more often? Is K&N really as good as they say?

2005 Mazda Tribute i (4cyl)
Oil Use Interval: 4,978 mi
Oil: Kendall synthetic blend 5W-20
(just changed to Mobil 1 full syn after collection)

Blackstone Report: Thanks for the notes. We suggest taking a warm sample to avoid any false fuel readings, which we didn't find here. We did find high silicon in this first sample from your Mazda 2.3L engine and that could show some abrasive dirt getting past the air filter or harmless sealers if any repairs were made. Check the air filter/intake system for problems. The viscosity was on target for a 5W/20-grade oil and no fuel, coolant, or water contamination was found. Insolubles read 0.4%, showing good oil filtration. Try around 7,000 miles next and check back to establish wear trends.

Amazing oil has both Moly and Titanium what a sleeper oil .Firestone changes it for around $21 with though a e core filter. I gotta see if I can supply my own filter it still would be a deal.

It's really hard to read but I gather that Silicon is 20. The engine is broken in and unless you repaired something and used RTV sealant I would think seriously about tossing the K and N filter.

Unless, of course, you have the full drag race 4 cylinder Mazda Tribute. In that case, I understand the need for high air flow :-)

LOL

Since I've been using K&N for about 15 years, I wouldn't know where to begin when it comes to air filters. What should I replace it with? This Silicon was 48 for my Pathfinder.

PATHFINDER
ME: 48
AVERAGE: 18

TRIBUTE
ME: 20
AVERAGE: 07

AFE makes a great filter for the Escape/Tribute. I use one in mine. Very sturdy filter and great filtration. No oiling.

What's wrong with using an OEM filter?

I'm guessing nothing...just always thought K&N filters were the "best." Apparently, I was wrong, so now I'm looking for what actually is the best option for my vehicles.

At least for my cars, I haven't found anything better than stock filters. Not sure if that's the case for your Tribute (and Pathfinder).

"Stock" as in walk into the dealership and ask for one of their filters?

so for my Pathfinder, am I to assume that this one is actually new and not "used-good" condition?

Well of course they do. Every dealership has brand new cars too.

Many people think because K&N is reusable and is able to flow more air it is the best. If you haven't modified your vehicle it isn't and just marketing hype. The filter that has the best gasket sealing surface for your vehicle be it OEM or Driveworks will better serve you. The less that you have to open the air box the better.

I had K&N on everything I had also including the motorcycle.I tossed all of the them and went back to the oem type filters just for that reason.A lot of sand in Florida also.Could not tell any decrease in fuel mileage.
