They're citing the possibility of user data leaks to the Russian government.

After July 20, Kaspersky is prohibited from entering into any new agreements inside the U.S. under the new ban. Kaspersky can provide existing customers with cyber and antivirus software until Sept. 29, but after that "Kaspersky will not be able to provide security updates." Software services will "degrade," the rule says.
Raimondo said she wanted to make clear that Americans and U.S. businesses who continue to use existing Kaspersky products will not be breaking the law, but they will not be able to update their products as of Sept. 30. "I would encourage you in the strongest possible terms to immediately stop using that software and switch to an alternative in order to protect yourself, your data, and your family," the commerce secretary said.

And should the businesses that continue to use Kaspersky be the entry point for a future cyber attack, the entire executive team should be jailed, and more importantly, impoverished forever. To continue the use of Kaspersky is an act of treason.

Fear sells advertising. Banning it makes sense but it's naive to think any one in Russia needs it to create a cyber attack. Nor does it mean anything from China either.
Ransom attacks happen many times a day in the USA against corporations and tens of millions paid in ransom every month.

Anyone who downloads a file can infect their company and that is only the tip of the iceberg.

All import vehicles should be banned as well then and owners treated same way? All electronics made outside USA as well? Was there ever a proof Kaspersky was involved in malicious activities and if yes then why was it not banned back then?

We're not at war with Germany, Japan, South Korea, Italy, or Sweden - all of them exporting cars to the US.

On a related note, didn't Canada ban foreigners, the Chinese in particular, from buying homes and property in your country? Wasn't Vancouver ground zero for that movement? At any rate, it's still legal for the Chinese to buy homes and property in the US. Even the Russians can buy homes and property in the US.

I used it years ago. It was good, competitive, AV. But I don’t know anyone that uses it now and haven’t seen it on any clients computer in years.

Malwarebytes is what I use and recommend personally, although I wish they’d stop trying to upsell their other services all the time.

Are you saying USA is at war with Russia? This kinda confirms what Russia is saying about USA and NATO then.
There are restrictions on foreigners buying property for investment reasons, not if they live here, but then again there is also 'vacancy' tax on locals buying properties they don't live in and used as investment.
Remember 'freedom fries'? USA wasn't at war with France back then either.
Also, USA is actually still buying oil and say uranium from Russia despite all the sanctions, very selective what's getting banned if you ask me.

Well, I have to train constantly on cyber security - and we get sent mock attacks often … The way it works is based on “suspicious” activity - not waiting until a disaster - Perhaps some SME’s are suspicious right now - and that’s that …

Here is an interesting fact I learned recently. Besides most everyone here is posting on a product made in China or components from China.
We willing buy their stuff.

We also eat their food. 1/3 one third (think about that) of pork sold in the USA and produced in the USA is produced by a Chinese corporation called Smithfield Foods.

I always thought a little strange though relying Russian Kaspersky for anti virus,

Much like HikVision is the worlds leading security camera and systems owned by the Chinese government ( banned in USA government buildings a couple years back)
Most likely has captured a face photo of you at some point. They also sell consumer products under other company names like EZViz which are great consumer priced cameras that work well. Heck I got one inside our home right now allowing me to check up on workers replacing all the flooring in our house. (What a story on that, brand new home)

I’m certainly not in favor of Chinese companies but I won’t be a hypocrite either as we all buy their products

I have Wyze cameras. They’re rebadged Chinese cams with different firmware. Who really knows lol.

- If US can block AV update IPs country-wide then that tells me the U.S. is getting closer to progressive socialism.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration hasn't responded to Microsoft's repeated infosec failings – which lawmakers have warned pose "a serious national security threat."

These shortcomings were the topic of a congressional hearing last week, and a Homeland Security investigation that found Microsoft's "avoidable errors" allowed Beijing's cyber spies to steal tens of thousands of sensitive emails from the Microsoft-hosted Exchange Online inboxes of high-ranking US government officials.

I would be fine if they did this with telemarketer phone numbers / systems. In fact, any presidential candidate who has a plan on eliminating telemarketers would probably win the election. Most common people have no idea what's going on in the world but sure are annoyed when they get 2 calls a day from India.

Do you use a home phone or what cell provider do you have? I rarely get telemarketers for whatever reason and when I do the iPhone shows potential spam so nope and block
