K24A Starter

You'd be surprised. It was less than $100 difference for an OE Honda starter the last time I checked; definitely worth it.

There is a HUGE price difference between the Honda OEM new starter and the DENSO remanufactured starter, even at discounted online pricing in the U.S.

But much less difference between the Honda remanufactured starter.

Hi All,

Recently been trying to get my '04 Accord back on the road and the intermittent slow/weak starting has turned to a no-start condition. I've narrowed it down to the starter. I'm stuck on the lower/front starter mount bolt which is a 17mm and very stubborn to come out. I have the intake plenum swung out of the way and it allows what should be enough room to work but it's very slow going. My impact won't budge it, right now I'm getting maybe 1/8 turn before the socket flops off.

Currently using an impact wobble/universal and it's still slipping off, kicking the socket sideways and has begun to round the bolt head. I think I know the answer but is there any better solution at this point than removing more intake parts to make more room?
I assume your impact socket is a 6 point socket (not a 12 point). For stubborn/tight bolts/nuts a 6 point socket or 6 point wrench is best because it's more resistant to stripping. A 12 point socket or wrench fit more easily in tight clearance situations though.

Also, have you used penetrating oil on the bolt threads?

I did something dumb and you can learn from my mistake! One of the two starter bolts is fairly close to the knock sensor. I was using a ratchet and long socket and not paying attention...and then I noticed I had backed it out part way but was really tight against the knock sensor. I was unable to reverse the ratchet due to the pressure and it took about 15 minutes to finesse it out of that spot....

I also thought about replacing the knock sensor with a new OEM one while I was in there but it looked relatively easy to get to it from underneath......probably not a bad job if it's ever needed.

I've been cautiously aware of that knock sensor and will take care not to 'knock' it.

Yes, definitely a 6pt. I have doused with Blaster a few times.

Before you round off the bolt head use a rocket socket on it. Make as much room as you can to get the best access, extensions and swivels will reduce the impact guns output a lot.

I have a whole set of those sockets should I need them. Using one of those will guarantee that I need to replace the bolt, no?

As for right now I'm on a hiatus from working on it because it's been entirely too cold (car is outside, in the driveway). When I do, my plan going forward is to remove the TB and get a more direct bite on the bolt.

Also, I appreciate all the feedback on starters, I know I've bought a cheaper, no-name one and this car is not even worth the cost of an OEM starter. I will be thrilled if it lasts the 2 year warranty of the starter.

Watching this video might help you. He tests penetrating oils (store bought and homemade) to see which work and which don't. Also, which work better than others. I found it to be very useful info.

Hint: making your own penetrating oil by mixing acetone and ATF makes one of the best penetrating oils and that homemade brew is free if you already happen to own acetone and transmisission fluid.

If a good penentrating oil and 6 pt wrench or 6 pt socket cannot get-er-done, then the option of last resort is to use heat (gas or propane torch) to loosen the offending bolt. The heat method might also involve hitting the heated bolt with a hammer a few times. I don't recall the exact details.

I'm not sure of the exact details of the torch/heat method because I've never personally needed to resort to it. I've watched 2 guys do it, but I didn't pay attention to all the details. So I'll defer to more experienced guys to explain the details.

The 2 guys I watched use a torch and hammer did some swearing to intimidate the bolt into loosening. They succeeded in their quest to remove rusted bolts with no broken knuckles.

Maybe l missed it but what brand of starter did you end up going with?

I've made and used the ATF Acetone mix with success before but can't find my spray bottle of it.

A cheap Amazon brand, I know it's probably the last choice but I'll save the good quality parts for the family vehicle. The name is a funny one: Boatrip. They do at least allegedly have a 2 year warranty.

I would be interested in updates on how long it lasts. I have 220k on my original Accord starter and my nephew has a 190k CR-V(same starter). Since they have lasted so long l have preferred OEM but the cheapest I could find was $540 (l like to price shop in advance). The Rock Auto aftermarket starters range from $81 to $181 plus shipping. I have read O'Reilly's used OE manufacturers to make their parts which is $300.
I said all that to say l found a Honda dealer that was selling starters with shipping for $284. I don't know if it is a mistake on the website but l purchased 2:LOL:! Here is hoping it goes through.
Maybe l should have added this the "how big is your stash thread".

Based on the rust under this car, something else is likely to let go long before the starter (or engine itself) gives up the ghost.
