can you run a K&N air filter with out oiling it? or maybe using half the oil? i run the fram tough guard or purolator one that are both pre oiled and would like to install a K&N cold air kit just hate to risk over oiling and the damage it can cause. thanks for any info or advice. or maybe you guys could point me in the right way on choosing the best flowing NON oil filter. thanks

Yes, but it would work better if you oiled it lightly.

best flowing non oil filter would be either no filter or a paper filter.

Bigger paper filters usually = more flow.

A non-oiled filter will keep butterflies and rocks out of your engine, but wire mesh will do the same thing. It's the sticky oil that provides the filtration, not the filter's media. If you want to assure a high silica content in your motor oil, just proceed with the idea of running a non-oiled filter and thereby shorten the engine's life.

I go OEM filters all the way (and spark plugs! ) -most of the time they are within a few dollars of the after market and sometimes cheaper. -And in most cases they fit better and therefor perform better.

I like Purolator oil filters but the other day I tried to replace my Mustangs's air filter (K&N from previous owner) with a Purolator Pure One. I spent at least a half hour trying to lock the Air Box and the intake tubing with the Pure One installed in between. So frustrating I put the old filter back in, drove back to Advance Auto Parts and returned the Pure One for a Motorcraft (Ford OE) - it snapped back together instantly. Perfect fit, no gaps so unfiltered air could get in, 5 minute job. It was also $6 cheaper

As far as "High Flow filters" such as the K&N
I find it hard to believe they filter "better" and allow more air into the engine. -All other factors being equal (ie the size and volume of the intake plumbing) its impossible.

The K&N in my Mustang had very little usage, yet if you held it to the light you could see clearly gaps- Also, I found the screen that is right in front of the MAF to be slightly oily.

These are my observations, your experience may vary.

I pulled the air hose off the air intake of one of the buggies at the rally last week. He was running K&N, had sprayed it with their spray can.

After the semi-finals, before the finals the manifold and duct were filled with grit and oil. Engine was missing from fouled plugs.

I should have sacrificed my handkerchief for a picture. The ones of the duct aren't good enough to see what I could feel between my fingers and see on them.

You can draw your own conclusions.
