Sounds like a good recommendation to me..
The next step would to be buy/try/and cut open one of those Wix filters (and add it to my collection)..

I went to a second Canadian Tire store today and they had no K&Ns at all! Zero! Not even a spot for them at all.

I then went and picked up two more Carquest Premiums, these ones for my Firebird. I was pleasantly surprised that these were even cheaper than the ones I bought for my mom, wife and sister's cars. These ones were only $8.05 each. So when you factor in the taxes, these filters come out to $9.26 each, while the K&Ns on sale were over $16! Case closed, these are my new filters now.

Patman...I can get you any oil filter you want from Autozone. It's a twenty minute drive to Detroit and I go there now for my Mobil filters and pick up a few more to mail out to a guy in Calgary...I can add you to my list and mail them to you via Canada Post.Just a thought...this way us Canadians can expand our filtering experiance

Thanks for the offer Greaser, but my oil shrine is now stocked up with enough oil filters to last me through to 2004!

Yes, those were in CDN spacebucks. I usually quote the US dollar amounts in brackets, but I was feeling lazy today and didn't do the conversion.

That's werid. It is opposite here in Richmond B.C. CT are stocking more K&Ns instead. Stocking every size.

Where did you get the Wix ?

I couldn't find any wix/bosch near here.

Carquest and NAPA both sell the Wix filters, at NAPA it's NAPA GOld, at Carquest it's Carquest premium.

Believe me, there are Carquests and NAPAs near you, if you do a web search you'll find that there are more of these stores in Canada than you ever realized.

When we're talking about oil flow and which filters do best with this, I think it's important to talk about what oil they were used with.

Petroleum oils which tend to sludge up with hot engines will cause high performance filtering units like Mobil 1 to become plugged up sooner than if a synthetic is used.

Other factors to consider include the engine and driving habits of the user. High and fast-revving engines cause a lot of problems when a large amount of oil is suddenly sent to the filter. This may cause the separation between pleats to be lost substantially increasing backpressure. Also the bypass valve may not flow sufficient oil under such conditions and lead to oil starvation.

In general, petroleum users should use "lower" quality filters. That is, ones that don't filter down to say 15-20 microns. They catch more sludge than solid particles. The Mobil 1 filter should only be used by synthetic users as a general rule IMO.

My favorite filter which is supplied to me by SynLube and is manufactured by GM. It has a synthetic filter element which has a wire mesh backing to keep the pleats separate. It flows substantially more oil than most cellulose-based filters and can last up to 5 years which is important with a lubricant that has a 3000 hour service life. SynLube has advised me that most of the time, unless the filter was used on an off-road vehicle, that they seldom find anything in the filter element and the only reason for replacing the filter is that eventually, the filter element wears out. SynLube filters are labeled as Duraguard Gold or Hard Driver.

You don't buy a full flow filter to clean oil. Full flow filters are to protect the engine from large engine damaging abrasives. There are almost no large engine damaging abrasives in the oil in a modern engine using good motor oil. If you are getting a good oil analysis report with a full flow filter it is because of the engine and quality of the motor oil. It has nothing to do with the full flow filter. If you want that high dollar oil to do it's thing without the expense of draining it routinely install a submicronic bypass filter. If the oil pressure in your engine is 500 PSI you need a 600 PSI oil filter to be safe or you can clean your oil pump relief valve.
I saw a row of 007 James Bond Astin Martin cars in Motor Trend. They had Fram filters. Fram filters work the same as the others. They grab the big stuff. The little stuff wears out the engine.

nhp1, there is indeed alot of negative talk about Fram filters on this forum, but no hard data from anyone that indicates Fram reduces engine life. Nor any data indicating expensive filters lengthen engine life.
I don't mean theoretical data, but actual case history data.

I personally drove most of the 394,000 miles that my 1986 Toyota Corolla ran without an engine overhaul using Fram oil and air filters. The car was still running fine and not burning oil when it was totalled in a traffic collision.

On another Toyota forum an owner reported 427,000 miles to date and still going strong on a 1986 Toyota 4 cylinder truck using the base model Fram oil filter.

I now use OEM filters as they are no more expensive than Fram if purchased from a discount dealer and because they weigh more, have a thicker metal filter shell and more substantial filtering media.

Plus they used to go on sale every 4-6 weeks, but haven't in a while (and I wouldn't pay full price, they want $16.99!)

Just got back from my nearest CT store, which had almost zero K&N stock for the past year...Well things have changed .. they have close to half an aisle dedicated to K&N under lock&key. Still havnt been on sale for a while though...

So it's anybody's guess what CT is doing/thinking...
