I ordered 2 K&N oil filters from Amazon for my 08 328XI. This is my first canister filter vehicle so bear with me. I checked the K&N website and it lists 7014 as the correct filter for my year as well as a few additional years for the same 3 series.

The first filter I used was a MANN and it fit the canister in what seemed to be the proper manner. The K&N is a good deal shorter. Am I loosing anyhting by going to the K&N? I'm guessing less filter surface area??

Confused in New Yorkistan!

The 7014 is a cartridge filter as its more commonly called around these parts. If it's much shorter than the Mann you might have an application issue. What kind of size difference are you talking about here? Is it millimeters or centimeters?

According to K&N it is indeed the correct filter. It corss references the MANN and the Purolator PL15607. I'm wondering how the cartridge set up works....If I'm looking anyhting with a shorter filter. It's new to me so this is perfect place to ask!

Whenever i have changed a filter insert they have been a perfect pit.

No matter what make, main dealer OE quality or cheapest pattern filter around, has there been any dimensional anomoly.

I would suggest that there is an issue with the K&N cross referencing or perhaps your vehicle was built around the time there was a specification change in the filter fitted to you vehicle.

You could try checking one year newer or one year older and see if the part number changes.

Good advice about checking earlier or later years of the same model. If the size is off its likely a cross reference issue.

In any case, don't use it unless your sure it's going to seal. As far as I knew, cartridge filters don't have much tolerance for being less than perfect dimensions.

They should be identical in size looking at the dimensions specified. The mann HU 816 x height is 79mm, the k&n hp/ps-7014 79mm/3.125". Check the part numbers on the cartridges to verify correct parts came in the box.

Here are the physical specs on the K&N PS-7014 oil filter.

Yup! Wrong filter in the right filter box! Will be returning for the right one!

If you're looking for a new filter for use in your BMW, I'm beyond impressed with the AFE oil filters!

I've destroyed, to varying degrees, at least one of nearly every major filter make/model out there during 6hr+ stints on the track, with my 2.8L running between 5200-8150rpm while a constant 18.5-23psi of boost courtesy of a Lysholm blower is being delivered....
Yet every AFE has made it through a number of track days, and come out looking perfect for the 3-5k OCI!

AFE -- Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to check them out.
