Our Prius has about 5/32 left on the Yoko Avid Ascends, so they will stay in our garage for next summer on dry roads, but it snowed here and yesterday I took them out and slid all over.

We are tight on money so we needed an affordable tire and after looking at TireBuyer I was able to snag 4 of them INCLUDING shipping for under $250. I realize they are non-LRR but at this point I'm more concerned about winter performance and not getting stuck...been there, done that. If I take a 4-5 mpg hit, so be it, but at least I'll have some decent traction this winter if I need it!

These tires get pretty rave reviews. Anyone here have experience with them? They are a 70k tire.

If concerned about winter performance I would've stepped up to goodyear winter tires approx $12 a tire more. Plus they had a $40 rebate= about the same price.

Good choice. Traction during SD winters is more important than a few MPG. I don't worry much about MPG during the winter. It will be bad anyway.

If you're talking about Ultra Grips, I'd have to step down a size to 14's which I don't really prefer in winter weather. They would be cheaper after rebate but there's no tread warranty. They're also studdable so noise would be pretty bad.

It's a worthy choice but I think the Firestones were probably the best bet for me.

From a review :

Quote:
"Just returned from a 600 trip to Canada. While there I encountered a snow storm, was concerned as the tires are all season not winters,to my amazement even in a few inches of snow&climbing thru the mountains these tires did better than expected.Soon I'll order another pair for our other Toyota.Great job Firestone!!"

Why are you worried about tread warranty if you're going to put your summer tires back on later?

Peace of mind.

Haven't run them so can't comment on performance or tread life. I have looked at them a couple times though for different vehicles and the tread in person never looks like it does in the online photos. Online it looks pretty aggressive which interested me but in person the tread has been nothing like the photos show. Very mediocre and average and I have passed on them each time.

Hope yours are better.

Make sure you know what you got. The Firestone Affinity/Precision Touring line and naming system is, ah, confusing. See: http://is.gd/tEBTCW

The tires on the Boss's Bull are doing great so far, but it's only 3 months and 3K miles. Worked fine in the one mini-snow we had so far, maybe 1 mpg less than before, but that's part of the deal with any new tire. (Plus the switch to winter-blend gas.) I doubt you will take a 4-5 mpg hit, but I have heard the Prius is sensitive to non-LRR tires. As you say, winter traction is more important.

Not sure I would switch between two sets of all-seasons myself, but if it works for you, sounds good.

Got them today. They are in fact, "Precision Touring". Nice deep tread, hope it wears slowly. Could be a 50k tire possibly, warrantied for 70k.
