John Deere Tractor opinions

John Deere is a decent mower and if I were to buy a new one it would be the 110. I actually like the single cylinder Briggs motor and they have upgraded the camshaft. If it blows a head gasket, that's actually a straight forward pretty easy job for you (or your mechanic). I haven't had the headgasket issue, though.

I was engaging it at 1/2 throttle and I was told this was wrong. Ether way it make a bang/ clunk noise, like you ran over a stump with the mower blade.
Have you read the manual?

Regardless, I engage the electric PTO at 1/2 - 3/4 throttle but I'm curious what your manual says.

I'm planning to get a small garden tractor for grass cutting and some yard clean up.
Been looking at a John Deere S-100, its a single cyl. with a 500cc B&S engine.
Anyone have any experience with these, I have a small area to cut so I don't need something
large and I'm not interested in a zero turn mower.
Can you look around and see what other options exist? Not knocking it but you definitely pay the "DEERE tax" if it's green and yellow.

Copied from the user manual, Page 30-8, upper left corner....

"Idling or low throttle operation while mowing,
climbing hills, or towing could result in
transmission overheating. Always operate at
full throttle once the engine is warm."
Thanks. Does the manual state anything about engaging the PTO?
