I had a Jersey Mike's once. Yuck.

As someone from New Jersey, who has had the best of the best, I’ll say they are pretty darn good for fast food.

Certainly better than any other chain sandwich shop.

When I was little there were just a few down towards the shore. Along US9.

In the last few years a bunch have popped up. They don’t seem to vary at all. Fresh cut cold cuts, ok bread, standard additions.

I’d never get anything besides an Italian hoagie so I can’t comment on some toasted wacky bacon ranch thing. But their Italian is fine.

There are so many places around in NJ that have great bread (most important part), and good cold cuts, and that use quality olive oil and red wine vinegar in their sandwiches. So many that I’d never have an actual need for Jersey mikes. But if I wanted an Italian hoagie, and had to go to a chain or convenience place, Jersey mikes is about as good as you’ll get. The only one better is a little chain called Heritage’s.

Everything else is mom and pop or small chains. Primo hoagies is a Philly chain but I can’t imagine it has too many stores, for example.

It’s really all about the bread.

Mine was slimy and nasty. Nothing redeeming about it. Never went back.

It's the only fast food I'll do. Regular #13 on wheat Mike's way. The quality is great and the freshly sliced meat and cheese really makes a different in taste. They're also not cheap with the meat. For $10, I think it's a great meal.

It’s really all about the bread.

This. Thirty years ago in Pine Brook NJ was a little deli named Coletti’s. A Coletti’s Combo was your classic Italian sub. The bread was incredible. Crusty but not tough, and just the right size and texture. Not airy or too dense. Not overstuffed, meat sliced so perfectly thin right there. Chef’s kiss.
Occasionally I’ll grab a bastone from Calandra’s and get a deli to slice me up some meat to get close to the memory of that sandwich.
