I will be picking up a new Jeep SRT8 next week.
Anyone know what oil is standard and what synthetic
would work best with this 6.1L 420hp Hemi?

I have heard it specs for Mobil 1 0w40.
Not sure if this is a Group III or what.

What say you guru's.

Hi Critic,
No, the admiral gets the TL. It's barely broken in with 18K. Great car which
I hope stays in the stable for some time. We will sell the '01 1.8 turbo
VW GLS that my wife has had since new. Only 19K and like new.
Driven by a LOL (little old lady) all it's life.

This purchase is somwhat an act of insanity but a fun one. I demo'd it
today and was quite impressed. Seems well put together, fast, firm
and great handling ride, kinda like my '93 Typhoon but way better.

Getting back to oil I did a product query on the Amsoil site and they
had no engine oil or filter for this engine. While it may be an error
or dated info I will write tech services for the final word.

Should the Mobil 1 0W-40 be a group IV that will be OK too. Just don't tell
any of my fellow Amsoil dealers OK?

I'd like to see the AMSOIL 5W40 in action anyway given it's recent formulation change.

I have the same engine in a charger. I have used the factory rec. 0w-40 M1, works fine. Amsoil 5w-40, worked fine. RP XPR 10w-40 worked great, Red Line 5w-40 worked great, Red Line 10w-40 was a disaster, so thick it lost 5-10% HP, not an never heated up much, ran like a stallion. Best engine I have ever owned. Much smoother than my LS2.

I was tryiing to say that I had this car in Arizona last summer at 130-150 MPH for hours during 100+ weather. It performed beyond anything I have ever driven or owned. You will love this engine. However, thin oils don't do well in it. Which is interesting becausr the 5.7 liter, which is the same engine in many ways, uses 5w-20, but they have the cylinder shut off on the freeway thingamajig. WISE BUY!!! GREAT ENGINE!!! Please contact me privately if you would like any mod suggestions as I have tried and done a lot and know what works. ENJOY!!!!

Amsoil makes a 0W40 I think for water craft that seems to be shear resistant and full of additives! They also have their Series 3000 HDEO in 5W30 that would more then protect that engine! Not that their is anything wrong with their 5W40 just some other idea's.

Yeah, I don't understand why if the 5.7 gets by with 5W20 for MDS why the 6.1 just HAS to go up two grades. I'm sure it's been discussed many times, but as I have now added a Magnum HEMI to my choices for my next car (3 kids-what are you gonna do?

) I've been giving it more thought.... I'll be opting for the MDS 5.7 cause it WILL be a commuter car....

Guy at work had a Chev truck with a V8 and traded it in for a Ram/hemi-MDS .He told me that he just took his first long trip with the new Ram (3000km).He has relatives in Niagara Falls and with the Chev it would be a full tank of gas trip one way. With the Ram it was a half a tank!He didn't know how many gallons both tanks held but said when empty they would both cost the same to fill.

to BITOG. I will let the other 1400 members respond to your thoughts. This thread is getting ready to be a 4 or 5 pager.

By the way, nice Jeep

Well I have the beast home now. WOW what a package.
I looked at the Mobil website and they inferred the 0W-40
was synthetic base stock.

I am waiting for an answer from Amsoil as to their European
oil if it meets the oil spec for this engine.

That SRT8 is an AWESOME SUV! I always loved Cherokees and this one just does it all. I had a Syclone and loved that truck (like your Typhoon) - but can only imagine the improved performance and luxury of that Cherokee SRT8. I knew what you were talking about right away - I think the others are confused thinking it was a 300C - which does also have a 6.1 Hemi. I was not aware that the charger also got this engine, though.

Enjoy and be safe.

Besides the Jeep there are the 300C, Magnum, and Charger SRT-8's with the 6.1L. In Europe there is a 300C Touring SRT-8. Think Magnum with 300C nose and interior.

There is also a possible Durango and Dakota versions of the SRT-8 in the planning stages. However the new 6.4L SRT-8 engine may be out by then.

Well at this point the jeep SRT8 with the AWD is the second fastest
SRT8 vehicle in the group beaten only by the Viper.
6.4L Hemi??
Good Grief my new vehicle is insane enough at least for a 60 y/0
Ride is tight and handling fantastic. Acceleration is well.....
almost unbelievable for me at least.
