So apparently The ol' jeep Cherokee may have an issue with rear end accidents causing fires due to gas tank placement. (Ford Pinto anyone?!)

It effects basically Jeep Cherokee 2004 and older

My 2 cents:

1. Really?! The design was discontinued in 2004 and we are JUST NOW arriving to this point?! Really?!

2. Here comes the overblown media machine. Soon mass paranoia -uggggg

And the Chrysler bashers.

Number 1, There is no recall at this time.

Number 2, I also assume you mean the Grand Cherokee, since there are differences between the Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee, and the Cherokee was only made through the 2001 model year.

Number 3, This has been an ongoing push by certain automotive activists for years. Interestingly, none of the data is consistent - wildly different numbers from the same outfit. The latest bent is that since they were unsuccessful in getting a recall done when Daimler was involved (again, the government rejected a recall at that time), that now Fiat should be subject to a recall.

Number 4, Interesting that the issue is only on Grand Cherokees when the Cherokee also had the rear tank from 84 to 01. If such an issue, why aren't these also included?

We had a '96 Grand Cherokee with the Up Country package. It had a massive skid plate under the fuel tank, and I think that was part of the Up Country package. It could have been pushed down the runway by a 737 and that tank still wouldn't have split.

We set the back of that Jeep down on rocks and stumps often on Jamborees. Without the skid plate, it would have been much more vulnerable.

The term you used is SKID PLATE. Much different then taking a impact from the rear. Sliding down a runway is one thing. How about hit in the rear by baggage or plane tractor doing 70 mph. Throwing this out there for sake of discussion.

First it was the Pinto

Then it was the side-saddle tank GM trucks

Then it was the Crown Vic/Grand Marquis

Ford , GM, Ford, then I guess the media decided it was Chrysler's turn.

You hit any car with the tank behind the rear axle hard enough in the rear, and it'll do that. This isn't some huge discovery.

H-body GM cars did it too but for some reason all the media attention was on the Pinto. ( but oddly enough, not the MustangII built on the same platform)

The media is just weird about this stuff.

It's not really a problem. Yeah, the tank can be punctured, but actual fires from accidents with these are very rare. Plus, if you have a trailer hitch, your tank is much better protected, and adding the upcountry package skid plate helps even more. With both, the chances of something puncturing the very thick plastic tank are almost 0.

If you've ever seen the optional (and aftermarket) tank shields on XJ, ZJ, and WJs, its much more of a reinforced box around the tank than just a "skid." Combined with the trailer hitch, you'd be REALLY hard pressed to rupture a tank on an XJ or ZJ. The WJ tank always looked a little more exposed to me, but "eyeball engineering" is usually dead wrong.

But in the bigger sense, I mean, REALLY, [censored]? ALL cars used to have rear mounted gas tanks tucked up right behind the bumper (and in fact the Ford Panther and its predecessor platforms that were so maligned for gas tank fires a few years ago was actually one of the few to have it further AWAY from the rear bumper!) These are vehicles that have been out of production for close to 10 years. The safety nannies should just **** and give it a rest already. Don't think a vehicle is safe enough for you? Don't buy it. Sheesh.

I realize there is no recall at this time- Thus the "Really?!"
My comment is aimed more at the 6 o clock evening news turning the issue into a bigger event than it actually is.

Yeah, it was called a "skid plate" by Jeep, but really wrapped up and behind the tank as well. It really is more of a reinforced box that surrounds the tank. It was STOUT.

I wonder if the Dateline NBC crew has any of those explosives left?
