Which gear oil are you using for your Dana 35 open diff? I'm using Royal Purple Max Gear 75W90. Previous fill was Amsoil Series 2000 75W140 but decided to go thinner for fuel economy. I don't tow or off-road. Rear diff still makes a slight "ssshhhh" noise but always did even with the 75W140 and after the carrier bearings were replaced....sounds like ring & pinion noise? I just can't seem to get rid of the noise....a bit annoying. The radio tunes it out. Have you had a similar noise and what did you do\use to get rid of it or at least quiet it down significantly?

I don't have a Dana 35 in any of my Jeeps so can't help you there but I use Pennzoil Gear lube in both with good results.

I use Schaeffer's 80W-90 in my D35C with the limited slip (I just use some additive for the LS). Has been working great even though DC calls for Syn 75W-140.

Thanks guys. What about for quieting down the rear diffy? Is the only "possible" solution to just go thicker...maybe 80w140 or 85w140?

The only two reasons there's noise coming out of your rear axle is a) aggresive gears pattern or b) something is wrong in there.

I put Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 in both diffs of my wife's 2002 GC.

I'm running Torco 75w90 in my TJ...But I ordered a rear d44.

I drained the stock diff lube @ 34K and it was nasty lookin.

My XJ has the Chrysler 8.25 rear end, and it's full of the Pennzoil synthetic, and like Greaser, I like it fine. The manual transmission has Amsoil 75W90 in it.

Greaser... "NO issues in that pig"... that's funny, I refer to my XJ as the Pig, the Hog, or Ushi, which means pig in Japanese.

My XJ has the Dana 44 rear end. I have been using conventional Pennzoil lubricants in both differentials, the transfer case, and the transmission. It is now close to 220,000 miles, with no problems.

Well I have over 100,000 miles of off-roading,daily driving,trailer towing on my XJ and the Pennzoil lube with NO issues in that pig so to me thats good.My TJ doesn't have that many miles on her but around 63,000 miles with the same results..so thats good too.To say I wouldn't have the same with another lube would be a lie...but to say the Pennzoil stuff has been good for me is true

Ran REDLINE 140 and 90 weights to experiment in our non-LSD equipped DANA 44 JEEP, towing and solo, over 50m. The 75W-90 was fine.

Both my Dana 35c and Dana 30 are quiet. The first owner drained the factory oil and filled the cases with Mobil 1 75w-90. At 50Kmi both cases drained BLACK. I refilled with Mobil 1 75w-140. No noticable difference in fuel economy. At 64-66Kmi I drained the rear case and it looked good.

What do you think the constant light ssshhhhh sound coming from my Dana 35c is?

JeepZJ, does the sound occur when under accelleration, decelleration, or coasting?

A scored ring and pinion gear set will usually make a somewhat louder noise when under decelleration......

The sound is constant. It's not a rumbling or growling noise like when my carrier bearings were toast and needed replacement. It's more of a slight ssshhhhhhh noise if that makes sense. It's been that way for the last 30K miles or so. Sound doesn't change in pitch during accelleration or deccelleration. I hear it more with all the windows up and radio off. I tried a thicker gear oil in 75W140 the last time I changed the rear fluid but still made the noise. I just replaced it with 75W90 and the noise is the same.

Could it be the drive shaft?

cool to see a veriety of oils being tried in a dana-44... as it applies to my situation... I have an isuzu rodeo (95).. It has a dana 44 in the rear. Been thinking about trying a "quality" gear lube, would like to get friction down as much as possible, anything to help fuel economy. 80w90 is the recomended from isuzu... I might stray a little from that to get better economy if possible. was thinking 75w90.

Sure it could be lots of things besides the rear. Universals would tend to oscillate due to the change in velocity of the joint ..that's usually a squeek-squeek thingy ..at least initially.

Are you lifted at all?? Your slip yoke may be extended a bit and you're hearing the boot complain.

Although the noise doesn't fit, when is the last time you paid any attention to the t-case??

My Jeep is stock, not lifted. The last time I changed the t-case fluid was 30K miles ago. I'm planning on changing it next week with Amsoil ATF anyway. I'm really thinking it's ring & pinion noise or maybe just the pinion bearing. The faster I drive (70-80 mph) the less noise it makes. I hear it more while city driving 30-40 mph. Kind of annoying but I guess I'll have to live with it for now. BTW, I just checked the front diff fluid (Amoil 80W90) and after 30K miles the oil was still clean and amber (honey) in color.
