Jeep Experts Needed

I have a 2004 Wrangler with an automatic transmission. Trying to find out what automatic transmission Jeep used in this Wrangler. I've heard two names thrown around, 42RE and Asian Warner. Would it be either one of these?

Well, if I read correctly it is, S8P761031

Every listing I find shows a 42RLE.

Something wrong with that VIN but anyway mpersell is correct i should have checked without it first.

I assume it has a 4.0L 4x2

Mopar Reman Price $1995.00 that comes with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty

Well, I can't read. The last nine of the VIN are, 84P761031.

It does have the 4.0L engine and it is 4wd. It has 2 wheel high, 4 wheel high, and 4 wheel low.

If it is the 42RLE, is there anything wrong with that. I do not need a transmission, but was just curious as to what it had.

ignore the 4x2 part busy here getting distracted does not matter if it's 4x4 or 4x2.

the 42RLE is the only auto trans for that year they had.

A bit of googling only shows one 4 speed auto transmission for the tj between 2003 and 2006 which is the 42RLE. It appears that some of the manuals where aisin.

Anything else you would like to know about your vehicle?
it has a 231 transfer case
Dana 30 front axle and Dana 44 in the rear with Trac-Lok 3.37 gear ratio

Appreciate the info. Is that a good or bad transmission? Just want the thing to last.

not many problems with that transmission we have never entered that part in your system.

3.37? Not 3.73? I've run into 3.07 (rarely), maybe 3.55 ..but most with 3.73. In the older 4 bangers it was easy. 4.11/4.10 in the 5 speed ...3.73 with the auto.

According to the build sheet for my Jeep that Mustang58LX sent me it is 3.73

The 42RLE is a pretty decent trans.
Essentially its a beefed up 4 speed Caravan trans without the diff.
It's all clutches and no bands and is adaptive to the way you drive. No adjustments are necessicary.

Most newer Chrysler built automatics are based on this proven design now

I've heard few complaints about this trans...but I'm very glad my TJ has the 904 derivative ..the 30RH. Anyone can rebuild one in an afternoon.

In the Jeep Liberty world, in the Forums I check, that transmission is described as a lighter-duty unit than the 45RFE that was used in the 02 and early 03 Liberty. We have an 02. At the same time, there is not a record of posters saying their transmissions failed.

I have concluded if it is indeed a lighter-duty unit, it must be strong enough. Whether they switched to it for an engineering , or cost-saving, or availability reason, I can't say.

One complaint I have seen it that they say they have had trouble backing up a hill (? !). Some had to give it a lot of gas, others shifted into 4-wheel drive, if I remember right.

I have the same complaint with Reverse in my 08 Liberty, seems it needs a lot of gas to go up hill in Reverse. It also felt like there could also be a slight shudder going up hill in reverse, but I can't get it to do it again. I thought it could be that the gear ratio for reverse is a little higher than 1st would be for Drive.

What auto transmission are they using in the 08 Liberty?
