I'm still in the market for a new SUV. Have looked at LR4 and Yukon. What do people think of the Commander? It is being discontinued and there are great deals to be had on the remaining 2010 vehicles. Seems like you can get a lot of features and car for the money.

The v6 version is the only non-compact car I've ever driven that felt slower than my Highlander. It also felt huge, though the other two you're looking at aren't exactly small.

My buddy owns the 08 with the V6. He isn't going to set any land speed records with it that's for sure. Having said that it is a good running solid reliable SUV and he plans on buying it when his lease is up.

Just get one with the 4.7 or hemi and you will be happy, also look at the Grand Cherokees.

My parents have an 06 limited with the 4.7. I wasn't too impressed with the engine... very sluggish and gulps fuel, compared to the 5.3 in my 03 Silverado. My advice would be go for the hemi if you're going to tow with it. Otherwise it rides nice and handles decently.

Do you really need a full-size SUV, or is this just a status thing?

Gas prices aren't going to get any cheaper!

Yes, I need one. Have had SUVs since late 80's. Many brands and sizes.Suburban/rural living, 4 kids, pets, boat trailer and other towing, occasional hauling AND need for off-road ability given the family's pastimes. A mid or full-size SUV, especially 4wd, can meet all those needs. Yes, you pay a gas penalty. Trade-off, I guess.

New ones are pretty much gone from dealer inventories. I haven't had one on the lot since May. IIRC there is a $4000 rebate so prices should be great. Selection will not.

They are excellent values used. Nice thing about them is so many configurations; V8 or V6, 2WD or 4WD, loaded to the max or basic. You can get a Commander pretty much anyway you want.

If you want the 4.7L, get a 2008 or newer model. That year saw a big bump in HP and a little better MPG. Otherwise, skip it and get the 5.7L Hemi. The 3.7L V6 is sluggish in the Commander and should only be bought on price. The 4.7L was dropped for 2010.

Only serious criticism is they slurp gas and the 3rd row is too small for adults. My brother had one with the 4.7L and it was reliable and pretty much hassle free.

Used is the way to go if you want a Commander.

Father in law has one, gotten to drive it. His is loaded with the Hemi. It moves very well with the Hemi (its out in colorado and I'm not holding anyone up in mountain driving in that thing). Fuel mileage is bad with the Hemi. Think he's getting about 14 mpg even for long term fuel mileage, and he doesn't tow at all. Seems reliable and rides nicely, though my perception is some of the sight lines are not the best out of the vehicle.

Not quite my cup of tea, but then again the whole Jeep line has evolved away from what I considered a Jeep to be. I've seen a few Commanders on a mild lift and then they actually looked like they should have offered in some package. It was reminders of the heydays of Full Size Jeeps....
