Jeep Cherokees still being made in China?

I found this online tonight. Does anyone know anything about the part at the end about XJs and the inline 4.0? I want to go where they're still making Grand Wagoneers.


The 4.0 engine was in production in North America until 2006, when the Jeep Wrangler TJ was replaced by the new JK design that uses Chrysler's OHV 3.8L V-6. It is foreseeable that this engine may be made for many more years in the People's Republic of China, where a slightly modified version of the XJ Jeep Cherokee with 2.5L I-4 and 4.0 engines are still being produced.

Grand Wagoneers (FSJ's) haven't been made since 1991. Jeep did build a "Grand Wagoneer" version of the ZJ (Grand Cherokee) in 1993 though.
They make a version of the XJ in China (called the 2500). Mahindra in India still makes CJ3B's.

BTW, the People's Republic of China is Taiwan....usually higher quality stuff than China.

People's Republic is Red China. Republic of China is Taiwan.

You're slightly mistaken. The People's Republic of China is mainland China. Taiwan is the Republic of China. (Not that the native Taiwanese had a great deal to say about it.)

The Grand Wagoneer is the first vehicle I ever drove! We had a real nice '78 and a beater '80, but we sold the '78 to a neighbour before I could drive. The '80 had the 5.9L and part-time 4WD. The '78 had full-time 4WD. I can still remember the good smell of the leather in the '78!

As said, sometimes you will find products listed as:

Made in PRC = China
Made in ROC = Taiwan
