Me and the Wife were out car shopping today and she really liked the 2015 Cherokee 4x4. It seems to be the perfect size. We looked at the Latitude with all the options except leather. She wants 4wd, but drives 100 miles round trip. So it needs to get decent mpg. With the rebates it can be had for about 26k.

Ran really well for a 4 cylinder. The 9 speed really kept it in its power band. It's not a drag racer but never felt like it needed more power.

Anyone have one of these? Hows the fuel mileage? Did you ever feel like the 2.4 wasn't enough? Opinions?

Thanks!

Their 9 speed automatic transmission seems to have some issues. I've read and heard a lot of complaints about it. Do some more investigating and do another test drive or two would be my suggestion paying attention to the transmission.

FWIW.

I have a friend who just traded a trail hawk in with less than 3000 miles on it. The transmission had been replaced and it had been in for several recalls. He had not so good experiences each time.

He says he will never buy another FCA product...

The 9 speed transmissions are a disaster. I have been following them on Jeepforum and it seems that Chrysler and ZF have no idea what they are doing with them.

When it starts acting funny, Chrysler's solution is to program out a few gears ... and it still fails after. There are some people on Jeepforum on their 3rd transmission before 50K miles.

I know you're looking for personal opinions, but, I've seen several reviews of the Cherokee that stated the 4 cylinder was under powered, particularly in 4wd configuration, and that the 6 cyl was well worth the extra money.

We see alot of them around here! I guess when they are selling 15,000-20,000 of them a month, they are bound to start popping up everywhere.

I work on them and NO, I won't ever buy one with the recalls and that P.O.S. Trans that's in it and the Cheysler 200's

Piling on the transmission issue, road testers say that, even when working properly, it almost never shifts into 9th, even on a flat surface when mated to the 4 cylinder. Maybe on a downgrade or with a strong tailwind. Tells you something about the thought that went into integrating it with the rest of the drivetrain.

When people say "Cherokee" I still think XJ, after all these years. And frankly, I'll stick with an XJ over the new front-drive based thing. If I were in the market for a new Jeep product today, it would be either a Wrangler (JK) or a JGC (WK2). Everything else they make now has been dumbed-down to variations on the run-of-the-mill front-drive derived POS. Don't get me wrong, I think the current Cherokee probably would return decent service now that they've field-debugged the ZF9 for a few years... but its not really a Jeep. Might as well buy a Ford Escape.

At least you can still pick up a decent XJ there

Mine is about as good as they get up here and it's starting to rust

You can still get a decent one... for an absurd price. The XJ was one of the most frequently targeted cars by the "cash for clunkers" program a few years ago. They were at their minimum value and people could get more for one that way. Took a lot of good ones off the road and a lot more usable parts out of circulation

I just had one as a rental, I actually had to pop the hood to make sure it wasn't a V6, it felt really peppy off the line. The one I had was a 4x2 Latitude, and I liked it a lot. One thing I did not like was when I put it into drive, it felt like it took 2-3 seconds to fully engage, but after doing that it seemed fine.

I have the 2.4 in the dart and it's been flawless after 21k miles. I know it's a different car but the engines are alike. I did test drive a trailhawk with the v6 and it was nice but the trans is what really killed that thing.

I'm not to sure what to go with then. Are there any others out there with a 100k warranty with the same features for about the same price? That get the same mpg?

Don't get too hung up on purchase price. I did that once with a Dodge Intrepid over a Honda Accord. Taking repairs into account the Honda would have been somewhat less expensive and much, much less aggravating. Guess what replaced the Decrepid?
