Jeep 4.0 PCV maintenance

I've owned a 2001 Jeep Cherokee since 2003. Bought it with 43K. Has roughly 134K on it now. (Not exactly sure because of larger tire sizes I've used.)

Anyway, it's been great. I've paid a lot of attention to maintaining it in hopes of it serving as a money maker for years to come. (No car payments means it makes me money.)

BUT, I've never changed out the PCVs. Seems to run fine. How big of a deal is it on this engine? I honestly don't know much about PCVs except location and that they're cheap (and relatively easy?) to change. Should I be more proactive, or will I know when it's time?

There is no PCV valve, It uses a metered orifice that screws into the valve cover.

You could probably pull the cover off and clean it of you want. Some people replace the tubes. I just clean them.

the official name is the ccv system (crank case ventilation). alot of people clean the system when they have oil in their air filter.

if the 4.oL can do with out a pvc system i wonder why all engineers just don't design a ccv system?

Yikes. Okay, thanks for the heads-up. No oil on the air filter, so I think I'm still good.

For one thing, there is no backfire control with a simple orfice. This is an advantage of a standard PCV valve.
