I have been using Mobil 1 5w40 in my hard working jeep 2.5L (6 inches of lift and 33 inch tires) but now can not find it so I bought a two gallons of Rotella Syn 5w40 to swap in for the next oil change. I am concerned that the RTS is a group 3 and not a true syn and want what is best for my jeep. I run 6 month 7500 mile oci's. I was thinking of going with Redline or Amsoil 5w40.
Is the Rotella worth running or should I switch to a true syn for my hard working jeep 2.5L engine.

In my opinion if you plan on keeping the car for quite some time and you want the best or close to it, I'd switch to Redline or Amsoil.

My '92 2.5L YJ has 7+" of lift, 35's, a SM420 granny low tranny and sees 95% trail duty. I'm currently running Chevron Delo400 SAE30 and it runs great. I also like Chevron 15W40. IMO, the best for a Jeep isn't necessarily synthetic. Heck, you could probably get 100K out of a Jeep engine with veggie oil

If you're pushing 33's with the factory 4.10's, a 7500 mile OCI, IMO, is a little excessive.

I am running the Rotella 5W40 in my 2.5, and will be doing a UOA in the next few months. Without seeing the results, I wouldn't make any claims but I have high hopes for this oil in the 4 banger.
Jeep OHV engines are solid and reliable old tech but they tend to shed more wear metals than other engines. I am not convinced that these are good candidates for extended OCI. Under 5K runs on moderately priced products is my tactic for the little Jeep.

The 2.5 and 4.0 are sufficiently similar that you might glean some insight from UOAs for the six. I had fairly good results on Havoline 10W30, better than with Mobil 1 in fact.

I take care of a Jeep 2.5 and I run 15w-40 Chevron Delo 400 in the spring, summer, and fall but run 10w-30 in the winter time. I use Purolator Pure One 30001 oversize filters also.

I did a long run with RTS. I still had some Fe shedding (30 ppm,IIRC)..but not too out of whack for 9k/13m. PureOne gave a spendid PC.

The oil was just fine over that duration. Held visc well ..etc. For $14.xx/gallon ..I think it's a great deal.

In about a week or two I'm sending in a 5-6k UOA on the same engine/same oil to see if I cleaned up a fuel problem that Terry flagged.

I have not done a UOA on D1 on the 2.5 and I have not done a UOA on the 4.0 with RTS.

However, both D1 and Agip PC 5w-40 both showed about a 1/2 quart of consumption at about 7k (which was when I changed it) in the 2.5. RTS had none

D1 did better in the 4.0 then RTS. There was some consumption early with RTS that decreased to about a quart every 9k/6months ..which is my current OCI. The consumption went, almost perfectly, 3k/6k/9k over three relatively short OCIs (the first two anyway).

I personally think that there is no better oil then D1 for those who need or desire a 40 weight synth. I've only ever seen one UOA where the mechanical issues managed to beat it up. The stuff is just too hard to find ..or too expensive in comparison to RTS. RTS has a better VI @ 176 as opposed to D1 @ 150 and has an almost identical 100C visc

It's hard to find at under $29/gallon. At $15/gallon ..RTS is a very close second for about half the price. Now if M1 TD comes in at $20/gallon like T&SUV ..then I'll be right back to using that for whatever is using a 40 synth. For $0.50-.60/quart more ?...absolutely. Over 9-10k? Not a problem.
