My 2003 Jag X-Type has the typical transfer case leak. When I inherited the car, I quickly read up about the common issues with the X-Type, a big one being the transfer case oil level.

I pulled the drain/fill plug right away and found NO OIL. I did find plenty of metal shavings on the magnetic plug.

I flushed it out with my Harbor Freight small parts washer while the car was on jack stands and running in 5th gear. It was like washing out a cup of dirt.

Anyway, I have filled, driven and changed fluid 4 times in the last 10,000 miles. Trying to milk the gearbox along and avoid a $3000 replacement (they cannot be overhauled, as parts are not available).

Problem is, it's making plenty of noise now (surprise!)

Can you guys suggest a gear lube that's thicker than Mobil 1 gear lube. I don't take long trips, but the gearbox get's seriously hot, as it's between the exhaust pipes and cats.

Consider Redline Shock Proof 75W250 it is about the best you can hope for! Running it dry is about the worst you can do.....I have no idea how much time you can hope for though since I cannot hear it or drive it....I do not know of anything else though that would do any better.

What weight gear oil are you using?

Gear oils are available in 90, 110, 140, 190, 250... weight. Go thicker and/or blend in 25% Lucas snot.

This is the under-engineering that gives brands a bad name, reduces their new car sales, and kills the resale value.

Just imagine if there was some common sense maintenance interval?

I'll try to find some, thanks.

Any other suggestions?

Just imagine! Jaguar says transfer case and diff fluid on an xtype is lifetime fill.

nice...

Maybe Auto-RX can help you clean out the gunk and may be useful in this case.

Try a thicker gear lube from Amsoil, RedLine and author major manufactures.

Your gas mileage may be reduced going to a thicker grade.

As far as the automakers concern, everything will be a lifetime fill one day.
And, as long as that lifetime statistically makes it past the warranty, then they are happy.
Those automakers will burn enough owners that they wonder why they have no buyers!!!
