I've stopped caring!

I have about 6,000 miles and about 9 months on Maxlife 10w30 in my Corolla, probably 75% of which was balls to the wall highway driving (from my storm chasing adventures earlier this spring). It's had probably 2 quarts of makeup oil.

I'm gonna let it go. Maybe till about December. By then it'll be 1 year and likely 7,000 miles. Longest oil change I've ever done!

I feel liberated actually!

7k is a long run on dino. I'd change it. It'll only take 15 minutes. What year Corolla ? How many miles ?
My last one had 289k on it when I sold it.

Exactly! Plus, mostly highway driving, although that has changed to all short trip driving again.

7k on conventional is NO problem for a lot of engines.

If @ almost 6k I can get a used oil analysis like this --> 5,800 miles Castrol GTX 5w30 in the dead of winter and a TBN like that I'm NOT going to have ANY problems with a 7-8k OCI like I'm running now.

Good for you. It's the people that don't care that go 500,000 miles using the cheapest oil and long OCIs. The people that do care using the best of the best seem to have the most troubles. I can name a couple of my friends, one who hasn't changed the oil or filter on his Mustang in over 80,000 miles now, just adds oil when it gets slow.

Strangely enough, it often works out that way. Murhpy's law also works in reverse.

What I meant about "not caring" is I stopped over maintaining my car - too frequent oil changes.

Actually, I'm following the guidelines in the owners manual.

Previously, I would have changed it by 4,000 miles.

LOL- its those same people who have no clue what a good running car runs like. They start it up, it goes. They have the guy check the oil at the gas station, he short sticks them, then maybe adds some oil and on they go. Their cars do last very long, run like total carp, but its all good. We tend to head in the complete opposite direction, and worry about every little sound, or if the car consumed an extra few ounces of oil between changes.

Our Toyota did 160k on 7500 mi ocis before going to syn and extended drains. Still runs as new at 220k. Give your oci a try, run a used oil analysis and see where things are at...

I am going to try to go 5k on my 4.0L Jeep with current Maxlife fill and that is hard enough for me I also prefer 3-4k on conventional or synthetic blend

I am guessing it will be ok from a wear metal standpoint and the two make up quarts should keep the TBN ok. It is the insolubles that has me a tad worried. I do not think I have ever seen a OCI this long on a Carolla so I am mostly guessing on the above. If it was a Lexus or Toyota V8 I would say that once you pass the 8 month mark wear metals jump up a lot but we do not have anything like a 9 month UOA that I am aware of on the 1.8 I4 in the Carolla so it is all going to be a first. Have you changed the filer at all during this or is it the same oil filter for the entire 12 months? I ask because an oil filter change would more then likely keep the insolubles bellow the threshold!

I am planning on going to once a year once my glut of oil filters is used up but I am going to use bypass filtration and a decent synthetic.My car does not use oil so I can not count on make up oil to keep the chemistry in good condition. In this case your oil consumption has prob. helped you out.

Well when the machines get smart enough we will serve them. But until then we may as well take advantage of the machines.

I've been doing 10,000 mile OCIs since 1978. With the right oil it's not a problem.

I've gotten my fiancee to start caring about her car finally, and she wants to change the oil every 5k miles! Despite what it says in the manual about letting the OCI being determined by the oil life monitor in her surprisingly low-revving Honda Fit. It's on track for a 8500-9000 mile change interval right now on Pennzoil conventional. Not worried since it's a Honda and we're following the manual!

My Buick goes 7500-10k miles on whatever Grp. III oil is on sale at the moment. Previously cars of mine got changed every 3k miles before BITOG!
