It's been a while since I've seen this......

I put a new Radiator to replace a cracked one and Thermostat in a customers 96 Explorer on Monday. It was working fine when it left.

Wednesday during my lunch hr the truck came back on a hook. I came back from lunch and my boss told me to replace the thermostat.

So with out thinking I put another one in it. Got it back together and it got pretty hot pretty quick plus the heater was not working at all. I tried 2 more times to get it to burp.


So now my boss is telling me to put a 3rd thermostat in it. So we had a little talk.

He's one of those people thats super smart but sometimes the obvious things pass him right up.

I had to explain to him that the thermostat controls the flow of water to the radiator. It has no effect on the flow of water to the heater core. Even with a thermostat thats stuck shut you would still have a working heater........And we didn't.

So instead of putting another thermostat in it we made a bet.

I would remove the water pump. If it's bad he will buy me lunch. If it's good I would mow his lawn. Here is what I found when I removed the water pump.

My Sizzler lunch was very good today.

Haven't seen a metal impeller do that in a long time.

That looks like a BMW pump.

The Op's picture is a bit fuzzy. What's wrong with the original pump? Are the shiny vanes broken off? Or, is the impeller completely broken off the shaft?

My 98 Camry V6 had the exact problem with the water pump impeller breaking (mine actually broke into several pieces.)

Had the same issue with the heater not working and engine overheating.

Look like it beat up the timing cover too. LOL!!! Technically it's not a come back!!!!

Sorry bout that. Darn cell phone pic. The impeller is supposed tyo be a tight press fit on the shaft. This one fell off!

That is kinda rare, and is the last thing to check/change out, because of the difficulty in access.

But after all the other problems are addressed, you gotta dive in.
Gotta love plastic for this application! Puh-leeze!

BTW, some heater cores will , and some won't work with a bad thermostat. It depends on design routing.
