It's AMSOIL®, not Amsoil

Better include the P brand as well - using that garbage GTL, amirite?

I think the stooge is the one that pays more for base stock, as if it matters.

What would Zed do?

You'd have to change the internet to fix that. According to RFC 4343, domain names are case insensitive. I don't think amsoil is big enough to get that done.

So you're saying that all their products that they label as synthetic are formulated from base stocks that you consider acceptable? All of them are the same? Or if some are not the same then it's OK for them to call them all "synthetics" but not for other manufacturers to do so?

Quote:
What kind of base stocks does AMSOIL use? Are AMSOIL synthetic lubricants PAO-based?

Answer: AMSOIL maintains formulation details as proprietary and does not divulge specifics regarding the type of synthetic base stocks used in its synthetic lubricants. AMSOIL developed the world’s first API-qualified synthetic motor oil in 1972 and has remained the leader in the synthetic lubricant industry by continually researching new technologies and demanding only the highest-quality raw materials. As the company moves forward with new technologies it is increasingly more important that this information remains proprietary. AMSOIL views synthetic base oils the same as it views additives, with each having its own set of unique properties. AMSOIL does not insist on a particular type of base stock, but insists on particular performance parameters. AMSOIL chooses whichever synthetic base stock or combination of base stocks delivers the desired result and tailors its lubricants to be application-specific (gasoline, diesel, racing, transmission, gear, extended drain, extreme temperatures, etc.). At the end of the day, the type of base stock used to formulate the oil is inconsequential; the product’s performance is what matters.

How is that any different than what M and C say? Is AMSOIL a stooge too?

Are not Most all M and C branded ILSAC lubricants NOT SYNTHETIC and is it not the corporate fats guys bullied NAB to allow advertising that is patently false?

Where are the chants of "Lock 'em Up"! here?

OK.
AMSOIL are getting wishy washy now to I will give you that.

I've never used their products as I'm not a fan of skewed LONG DRAIN formulations.

BUT the Duck was a Duck - not a chicken.

And did anyone mention ANYTHING about performance?

Nope, as usual it's Hate without proof.

I respect your choice not to do extended drains...and unless you're always looking for a sale, since I'm a proponent (so far) would recommend the OE product.

But for those using Mobil 1 Extended Performance, or something else for OCIs greater than what's in their owner's manual, an open mind might find them a better choice.

Hate the MLM? Sure. Hate the lack of sales? Sure!

But AMSOIL® manufactures a quality product that always shows good results, that in SS form is capable of very long drains in some applications.

I will pass on your advice for not using Mobil 1 Extended Performance … 60-70 PAO, $5 quart, then I can run it half of the 15k without any worry in new DI engine (7k is all my OLM allows) …
I don’t doubt AMSOIL Signature Series is good stuff, but I can’t even figure out if it is Dexos or not in 0w20

This thread was doomed for failure, and 4 pages later nothing productive has been said or done.

Amsoil (amsoil, AMSOIL, etc) seem to divide the board like no other brand, and oddly enough I don't think it has anything to do with the quality of the oil, just with how it's sold/marketed. It seems to be a majority opinion that they make excellent products and their ATF/gear oil commands quite a bit of respect on here and elsewhere. Can't we just accept that for what it is and move on? Why hate on a product, especially when it is an excellent overall product? If it's too pricey for you, don't spend the money. If you don't like how it's marketed, don't buy it and mute people that you need to mute. Otherwise, let's just move on here.

How about some real numbers then? Is it 10% better than Mobil 1 0w40? 20%? 50?

If you do the math and can get Mobil 1 0w40 for $12.88 for 5 quarts after rebate, can get you the same or more miles per cent/quart with amsoil?

I mean if it's 50% better, then maybe it'd make sense to pay about $20 for 5 quarts. But you know it's more than that. Isn't it way more? A quick search shows $12.80 a quart. So it's about 5 times more expensive than Mobil 1. So is there math that shows it's 5 times better?

That's probably what it boils down to. If it's 5x more, it must be 5x better.

I just prefer the math to show that it's true.

As stated, AMSOIL® is in all caps. If you look on their corp site you will see it is in all caps. Just like NASCAR, not Nascar, GEICO, not Geico and CVS, IBM, JBL.

I know it is nit picking but if one is not aware then it would never change.

Just trying to give a little respect to a a small American company that deserves it. You have to admit, if it wasn't a quality product it wouldn't have lasted as long as it has. I know there are a bunch of AMSOIL haters out there because of the deadbeat no knowledge, think they can get rich dealers out there that give it a bad rap by there tactics in trying to push it on everyone.

I see it on here some where if someone states they use Mobil 1 they get corrected to say Mobil 1™

Just food for thought. Happy Monday!

So why didn't you type it in both colors?

My understanding is that if they certified, they would have to abide by the base oil interchange requirements of the API when they change suppliers...and redo certain tests at time.

(Oh that, and actually having to DO the tests that they "meet or exceed")

I've ran AMSOIL, Mobil 1 Extended Performance and Castrol Edge and Ravenol for 10k OCI in all signature vehicles.... and UOA showed no difference of note. So the main difference really comes down to price, availability and attractive packaging?

Of course, until you run them for the OCI they are intended for, you will not see a difference.
