I too enjoy changing my own oil. Speaking of dying breed, I forsee the day when cars will be engineered so that you can not change your own oil. You will have to take them in to a dealer to be changed.

Sure. They'll just make it too expensive to do it yourself. Right now the retail sector probably serves a purpose. When that cannot be continued ..the environmental laws ..whatever will just make the DIY oil change a thing of the past.

They kept SUV's and trucks out of CAFE for as long as they could for economic reasons. The same thing will occur on other fronts in the future evolutions of automobiles and automobile ownership.

I think it'll be worse- they will have sealed engines, like they already have sealed transmissions.caps, rotors, wires are all gone, plugs go 100K, etc.
everything has to go to lower maintenance when labor costs are high. like electronics, they don't/can't fix anything anymore, it's too expensive. mechanics don't 'fix' anything on cars, either, they just replace things. in the future, engines will all be plug and play, just pop in a new one at 100K, good as new.

Doug, Hi wonder what they used in the Porsche cars that WON at the Rolex 24 today. I can't imagine a more radical service interval. Redline would be my guess or some exotic group 4/5 from Europe. cheers!

Interesting I was thinking they would of been using some super high end oil. I can't think of any other race application that sees the same level of sustained abuse as the 24 hrs of Daytona.

Well, according to Johnny in another thread:
Quote:
The first and third place Brumo Porsches use a special synthetic formulation of Kendall GT-1 made for them by Conoco.

The second place Lexus/Riley uses a special Texaco syntheic made by Chevron.

All of the other Prototype cars, Ford, Pontiac, Porsche, and Lexus powered used Mobil 1. And not just some special oil, but the exact same product that Valvoline says is no good. That's right, regular Mobil 1 5w30. I walked through every pit garage and asked every one of them and a few showed me the cases of oil and I saw one of them pouring it in. They also all use Mobil Delvac 1 75W-90 gear oil.

All of the GT cars except for 4 or 5 also used Mobil 1 5w30, 10w30, or 0W-40. The cars that did not use Mobil 1 either used Castrol Syntec or Motul.

In the Koni Challenge Class that raced on Friday, most use Mobil 1 with a few using either Motul or Red Line.

The only car that I saw using any Valvoline product was the Mustang of Jack Rousch Jr.

well we do analyze oil to death here..i actaully do have ocd haha...frams filters are ok, i think they get a bad rap...i always use to use them...i have never done a uoa, i just read the ones here, but if i had a older engine i might do it...i think for most part it is a waste of money...and as far as valvoline is concerned, i would use any api oil..they are all about the same..that is one thing i learned here

the duffer ought to go to walmart and get the supertech oil change..it would be just as good and less $$$ than jiffy lube...imagine the add ons they try to stick him with...my wifes pastors daughter got stuck w/ a bigger bill cuz she didnt know any better...at least WM will test your battery if you ask them so you can see whether you need one..they did that for me this month
