I asked varian if their mechanical pump fluid was ok to use in our compressor that requires a 30wt non-detergent oil and the rep. just sent me the above link for the MSDS. We have a 3 gallon craftsman compressor for drying parts and we have plenty of The Varian GP on hand for out Varian vacuum pumps. I figure vacuum/compressor same difference.

I think this may be my first post, but I have been lurking for a while. Thanks in advance for the replies.

I wouldn't use it for three reasons.
#1 you ask the sales rep a legitimate question and he sends you a MSDS which has no relevant application or specification data.
#2 Varian seems to only make rotary vane vacuum pumps and that is all their oil seems to be spec'd for.
#3 I'd bet the vacuum pump oil is more expensive than sae 30 ND.

You are right about the expensive part, but the compressor uses so little that I was hoping for one less thing to order for out department. Thanks for the reply.

I wouldnt. Those varian pumps are specialty items for specific use. They are a much more delicate instrument with likely compromised lube specs. Im sure you can do much better. If the compressors use so little, just get a few qts of amsoil compressor oil or equivalent. Ive found that stuff to work really well in mine.
