Is USPS completely incompetent now?

I sent 2 letters certified mail in early June. This was basic CM no signature required or any other optional services. Just a letter with tracking for $6.38 each.

They didn’t deliver either of them. Both were returned to me as undeliverable and unclaimed. The address was 100% correct on both. I don’t think they even tried to deliver them at all. FWIW they were sent to Southern California. I just got them returned almost 2 months after they were originally mailed.

I’ve sent dozens of letters CM in my life and I’ve never had this happen.

Is this the new normal for USPS?
 
Since I subscribe to informed delivery, I know in advance what I will be receiving in the mail for the day. Once in a while but not often I will have a letter disapear. I have to admit when it comes to receiving a package, I have had far less trouble with USPS than Fed Ex or UPS.
 
My daughter works for the USPS and I have learned on my bills that I pay by check in the mail that it takes at least 5 days anymore to get through the maze of the postal system.
 
It seems like in this world we live in, poor service is to be expected. Anything from USPS to your favorite store.
We've had late / lost issues with USPS in the last couple of years. So much so we had to go direct withdrawal for some of our bills because USPS couldn't get the payment there in 10 days. Here in Indiana if I mail a letter to my neighbor, it goes all the way down to Indy for sorting, then back up to the Fort Wayne area.
I don't know if the USPS will ever be as reliable as it once was, you know rain, sleet, snow and all that.

Not sure what you mean by NOW?

All delivery services range from suck to mediocre at best. Have for many years, say since 2008 not good.

YOU THINK the address is correct, but I bet not. Correct to a point but missing something.
 
I ordered something from Australia during COVID. It was shipped through Australia Post with full tracking. I watched it make its way to California, where USPS accepted possession of it... and then it vanished.

I went to my local post office to file a missing mail claim. The postmaster told me that in 20 years of handling thousands of missing-item reports, he could only remember one or two that were ever found.

I laughed because I thought he was joking.

He looked at me and said, "No, I'm serious."

I asked, "Then why even have a missing mail process?"

He laughed and said, "So people feel like we tried to do something. The fact is your item is either making its way through the system or its not. If it's found not making its way through the system, it's put back on the conveyor belt, and if it's not on the conveyor belt, it's by definition lost."

That told me everything I needed to know about USPS.

Maybe...this was a $15 modified fuse to slightly increase the charging voltage in the Tundra because I switched to an AGM battery. Not a high value item and really only useful if you just put an AGM battery into a Tundra.
 
IMO since the jungle site has gone to USPS from UPS it has overloaded the USPS system in a lot of areas. At least in my rural area.
Local folks are great here, it's the middle of the stream that is screwed up slowing things down.
2x on quality of employees, poetry in motion is the new norm.

Last year I had two credit cards stolen from the mail - in transit.
It was a new account so I never "activated" either card, but I received a notice that someone had tried to use the cards. Wells Fargo shut down the first one, and mailed a second one. The second one was used at a gas station successfully.
They used Fed-ex to send a third one that actually made it to me.
I had a little phone work getting the charge made at the gas station, (on a card I never activated) taken off my account.
I was instructed to make a police report. Wells Fargo wasted a lot of my time using the USPS.
 
We find the USPS reliable however like most there has been a drastic change in the speed of delivery. I used to think, unless I am wrong, first class or priority mail postage for the most part was 2 day. I can't remember the last time that happened.
I dont blame the employees.
I think a lot of it was reducing/consolidation distribution sites (have no idea if I am right)

An example, if a mail a letter to a family member 9 miles away but across the NC/SC border, it can take up to 5 days. The letter will go 150 miles from the coast to Raleigh NC, then across state lines to Columbia SC, then down back to the coast to be delivered to the address that is 9 miles from my home. All together the letter travels 550 miles.

Other times it can be shorter and it will travel roughly 300 miles. From the coast in NC to the distribution center around Raleigh NC back down to the coast but over the SC border. But it is one of the two all the time, happens to bother families when we mail each other.

I can remember which is the current path. But myself and the other family, it happens to both families when we mail each other and depending the path is what state its mailed from. Either way it goes at least 300 miles.

What was once a noble profession has slipped through indifference. A fish rots from the head. My actual postal carriers have been great guys. They're paid like $21/hr, but get lots of OT, but walk around six miles a day.
