Is using a 504/507 oil in place of 508/509 an issue?

Currently in my 2019 GLI 2.0T I run Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 (504/57 spec) and have for the last 20k, changing every 5k. The car is spec'd for 0w20 (508/509). The car is tuned by Integrated Engineering (Stage 1 ECU & DSG) and I've used a thicker oil since being tuned per their suggestion. They still use Liqui Moly 5w40 in their development vehicles, regardless of spec. From the little bit I understand about VW oil specs, 504 offers better wear protection than 508, slightly better fuel economy than 502, making it a nice middle ground I suppose.

Would I have any benefit to either going back to the OE spec of a 0w20, or going even thicker? ESP 0w30 has done very well for me, no oil burning with 5k OCI's, runs perfectly. Really the only thing that led me to ask this question is, I don't see many people with this platform go the 504/507 route. I have no issues switching one way or the other if needed, but so far this seems to be working well. FWIW I have not yet sent in an oil sample to be analyzed. Prior to tuning I used VW OE 0w20 that carried the 508 spec, no issues there either outside of a slight burn over the OCI

No issue whatsoever. Many do it here and the dealership would do it too if asked. I use 504 spec in about everything.

Been using Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 (504.00) in place of the recommended 0W-20 508.00 in the Tig since new. No issues whatsoever except MAYBE a slight mileage hit. But momma has a lead foot so thats a moot point. I would have zero reservation about using a "thicker" 502.00 either.

For 20K on a mildly tuned engine you haven't had any problems so why switch? There seems to be no need other than curiousity. It it were mine though, ANY tuning past OE would net me a nice, robust 502.00. But thats me.

I bet you a bunch of dealerships still use 5W40. They did for some time in engines that recommend VW508.00/509.00.

It's a mirage!
Need to have at least 10 posts before I believe it. 😅

OP: I'm sure you'll get some answers

Honestly, good question! Curiosity was really all, I’ve owned multiple VW’s spec’d with either 508, or 502 so I’m not very familiar with the 504 spec. Mostly just making sure I wasn’t missing something that would make it a bad option!

0w20 is 100% for fuel economy. The oil pump in the later 2.0Ts specced for VW 508 is modified to spin faster to generate more pressure to compensate.

VW 504 is a very good spec and IMO totally fine to use. The factory VW/Seat racecars came with Castrol 5w30 LL (VW 504) and don't restrict performance until 293F(!)--I'd be changing it right afterwards if I saw those temps, but it can handle street driving without a sweat.

5w40 is even better for protection, of course, but that LM 5w40 isn't anything special. I would be more concerned about build-up and oil consumption in your case, which ESP seems to excel at.

I now run Ravenol 0W30 (504/507 spec) in my '21 Audi SQ5 Sportback w/3.0 TFSI. It, too, is spec'd for 0W20 (508/509), but after seeing what happens with neglected oil to the cam adjuster gear and cam chain (wear/stretch) long-term (see VAG-Techic on YT), I switched at the last 5k(to 6k) mile OCI @ 18k miles.

Matter of fact, since I typically cold-start in my 45-50 deg F insulated garage here in the PNW, and we rarely get below 30 deg F, I might move my '23 RS5 from 0W30 to 5W40, as it was spec'd for the 2.9L back in 2017-2019 before Audi changed the spec, likely for fuel mileage.

In my Maverick hybrid I don't even take any kind of hit on mpgs using 0w30 504 spec. My VW Arteon is very fuel efficient as well.

504.00 is a great choice and a good middle ground split between "do I stay awake at night because I'm not using the recommended 0W-20 508.00 and my engine will blow up" and the "my gawd, how is it ever going to rev with this molassas-like ancient formula 502.00". And a bonus that the lower SAPS might just lower your chances of IVD or other muck. Maybe (but it might not be the oil ;)) . If you can get it easily, and for a good price, motor on.
