Is this a hornet?

Apparently only the females have stingers, and the males are totally harmless, but are still huge and will buzz around rather agressivly if you're around their hole.
True. But when the males come towards you, they are really just trying to find out if you’re a female wasp. They come right up to you to check you out but once they figure out you’re not, they’ll go away.

Or so I’m told.

Looks like a "yellow jacket" to me. I tend to hunt these guys down as they build huge nests and are very agressive.

Looks like the big bastard flying around my garage last week. Much larger than any Euro Wasp I have ever seen. Possibly a queen looking for a nesting spot.

I engaged with agressive AA fire in the form of soapy water in a spray bottle and was able to knock it down.

I just had a battle with the biggest **** hornet in the basement. I heard a buzz at my desk. Thought it might have been outside. Then it started to fly.

I don't do well with insects.

European hornet. They fly even at night towards your porch light. You have to find the nest and kill them all to get rid of them. My attic had a huge nest in it. Exterminator couldn’t get to it from the attic. Finally cut the ceiling drywall to get at them. Their sting really hurts.
