Unless you have a Model T you drive around, its a bad oil. See many of those on your streets. The problem is these oils tend
to over state their "quality" and bury their ancient API rating somewhere on the back of the bottle, while they're sold on shelves next to accepted brand names like Castrol, etc.

Most consumers don't know what an API rating means, let alone its significance. They simply infer they're getting a no name version of something close to the brand name, just a bit cheaper - like no name brands at grocery stores.

So yes, it is a bad oil.

There is a difference between wrong and bad, If I put an S rated tire on the Ferrari and the tire blows at 162 MPH [sustained] Is the tire a wrong rated tire for the application or a bad not properly manufactured tire ? ACCEL oil for all I know may be the highest quality SA oil on the market!!!???

I don't think there is any oil that is "bad" .... even the ACCEL stuff could be considered "good" as long as it meets the standards that are stamped on the bottle....

Now I don't see why anyone would run ACCEL even in an "older" vehicle where ACCEL "meets" the specs....when they could use a better brand oil that "exceeds" those specs.....?

Are there any vehicles that are that picky? That you'd have to use the exact same grade/spec oil as spec'd in the owner's manual, from say 1988? :P

I know I just got my oil change done on my 1988 dodge aries, using 5-30 Pennzoil, likely SM rated oil.....where as the ACCEL I believe is "SF"? Haven't seen any problems yet, sure I'm guessing the adpacks are different, likely "better"?

Why, the specs are the same.

You're the one who thinks RP is something beyond the label specs. The burden is on you to prove it....but I'm not exactly holding my breath.

There is ZERO burden on me to prove ANYTHING!

Your analogy misses the point that the front of the bottle facing the customer uses descriptive language to imply its the same thing as the API SM Castrol sitting next to it. Buried in the jargon on the back of the bottle is the API SA rating. So its misleading. It also uses poorly refined group I base stock with little to no additives, as that's all SA oil is. So compared to SM anything, its a bad oil.

Maybe a step up from PittPenn which claims an API rating it doesn't come close to, but both products are still junk.

Stick with well known brand name oil and you won't go wrong.

Wal-mart oil is decent for the price. House brands from AAP or Auto Zone may be decent as well if not pushed beyond reasonable OCIs.

Sigh. I think he missed your point. I'm a Royal Purple fan, but I know darned well that if I change RP every 3,000 miles or use PYB ever 3,000 miles, my engine is going to last just as long and be just as clean. There will be no discernible difference between the performance of either oil, assuming that properly speced oil was chosen from both brands.

Some of the Meijer's house brand weights are still SL. While some oils didn't move to SM because they had a specific application, Meijer's didn't move up because they are just cheap junk. Theirs was the only oil I put in my '88 Iron Duke that came out smelling burned after a 3k OCI.

I guess it's a matter of sematics. I consider an oil that doesn't meet any modern engine oil rating "bad." SA= no performance requirements. The difference between Accel and one that doesn't meet the rating, Accel labels it as [censored].

Folks here point to Pitt Penn. Like to see pqia test the Accel oil. Then again, it doesn't have to meet any requirement, so why bother?

Yes bad oil, IMO.

They are perfect for my Corolla, built in 1991 as 1992 model. Of course, I have to put up with these new fancy oil and the car is falling apart while the engine is strong as ever. I just spent 1800 dollars to upgrade/replace parts and it still needs shock/strut. The reason is the the engine is so good, I feel bad just not fixing it and one thing lead to another, I fixed just about everything.

No there isn't.
Next question?

What about that enviro brand you get at Canadian Tire (or used to be able to get) for like a dollar?

I wouldn't even use that SA-rated junk in a Model-T! Maybe we could have a good discussion of what oil works best in a vintage car, but it ain't SA-rated anything!

But I have a couple things to state:

Firstly, NOT ALL ACCEL IS SA-RATED!! Accel sells SM-rated, modern passenger car motor oil at Big Lots and it looks decent.

Secondly, I believe their SA-SF oils have a disclaimer that discourages using them in a modern era passenger car. But it's been a while since I checked.
