Is there any harm?

Hi All,

Was curious about MC 5w20 after reading another post about great results. I have had good experience with this oil in the past and even used it in my Volvo's but now with getting a newer/nicer car, the 2001 Infiniti i30t it got me wondering if I could safely use this oil in that car.

Does anyone have any input? It seems like a stout oil and I love the way it felt in the other cars but I do not want to jeopardize anything with my Infiniti as it calls for 5w30. It is not under any type of warranty so that is not an issue.

I would appreciate some feedback. Thank you.

They make MC 5w30.

Kendall GT1 and Trop Arctic are offered as syn blend 5w30 blends and are from CP like motorcraft. Might go that route.

I would stick with the 5W30 unless the car was specifically back spec'd to 5w20 oil. Otherwise I would leave well enough alone.

I made the switch from 5W30 to 5W20 in an old Ford back spec'd and had no problems. In some instances engines develop a wear pattern, and a thinner oil might cause some oil burning. In some cases the thinner oil might lessen oil use as per a Shell study I read a while back, it depends on the condition of the engine, and what is causing the oil use. That only applies to engines using oil.

You won't know until you try, but I'd check to see if the engine was back spec'd first. JMO

Use the MFGS recommended visc. I know we are more clever than the mfgs, But it is a cover you behind as to the warranty. Once the warranty is over most likley you are paying for any failures so experiment then. Though I doubt there would be any type of instant failure.
