I stepped ON them.
As I remember, the 'reasoning' went something like: If one segment suddenly collapses - and falls into the lava below - I'd still be safe. ( I read lots of books about volcanoes, tornadoes, etc.

I blame everything on my dad! Freud would be proud!
Back when I was 7 or so, he stashed some glowing charcoal under a rock, and excitedly called me over. "OMG, there's a VOLCANO coming!" I don't remember much after that, but I apparently spent the next few hours is a state of abject panic. (According to Mom, who wasn't exactly thrilled...)
