I think this is fantastic. If the United States can go from a purely government to a private enterprise space industry, it will probably be the next giant leap in technology. Better us than China or Russia.

^ +1. I don't think it has to be purely private. It will probably remain a public/private venture.

I've said it before, but I firmly believe that investing in space exploration and development holds the key to our future as a species. earth can only do so much. Colonizing and exploring new planets and worlds will provide tens of millions of new jobs in all sectors. Mining, here on earth and on mars, asteroids, who knows. Manufacturing, to build prefab housing and stuff. Not to mention the rockets to get them, stations, who knows what else. And high paying jobs those are too.

But then I see people who complain about NASAs budget saying all that money is going to waste. Tsk.

So serious. I hope that you can get over it. Now for something completely different!

NASA was a great investment. One of the few. Tons of great spin off tech has filtered down to real world items.

But we DO have a private space industry, right here, right now. And they are already contracting orbital payload delivery.

It's just a matter of time before we move on...

It's not me, but the mods.

NASA has been a great investment. We're not investing enough actually.

NASA has certainly been better than most government agencies as at least there is something tangible that the tax payers have gotten in return. And NASA does have a legitimate military function so not all of it's budget is for toys.

I'm glad to see that more and more private money is going into space tech. Since the investors are putting up their limited amount of private money, resources will be used much more efficiently. Giving rich people a ride is a great way to fund this technology push.

Mars is a long way...even doing the flyby it's over a year and a half...I don't think a millionaire can afford it...was thinking more along the lines of a billionaire...

Let's send Warren Buffett there.

I wanna see who can get a manned spacecraft to Mars for a few million dollars.

Private spaceflight has only just got some cargo to the ISS...even to the moon is a pretty substantial feat.

Neat someones thinkin' big though.

I had a guy tell me he went to mars a few times and built planes with rocket engines. I didn't know whether to believe him or not but he was talking about all of these formulas and mechanical jargon that I honestly, honestly believed him.

he told me a lot about the government and they had stolen some ideas from him and bankrupted him. He used to be a billionaire apparently. smart man. just way out there, didn't know what to think. I don't think I'll ever forget him.

We need Warren Buffet earth side. 2/3 of this planet is covered with water. If I were in charge, I would be exploring the ocean.

If someone wants to pay for it and write it off his/her bucket list, sure why not.

We need a few brave, rich souls to reduce our risks and cheapen the design. Unlike a war machine we can tolerate a few lost souls in the private sectors.
