Is long term reliability of GDI engines valid??

Hi,

Is anyone else here very nervous and concerned about the long term reliability of 2014
year GDI engines, particularly Hyundai and Kia??

Especially carbon deposits and the high pressure fuel delivery system? Will this prove
to be a very costly maintenance expense for someone planning to own the car long term,
after the 10 year/100K warranty expires?

Or has all the potential issues and problems been ironed out for this current 2014 year GDI
engines?
 
Well, they have their quirks.

I am just glad I got my Fit before they make it GDI.

GDI is the only way to get more efficiency per power stroke so it is what it is.

I think Toyota has the cleanest GDI system right now.
 
Too new to tell, although some mfgrs do not seem to have issues.

Noisy injectors and high pressure fuel pumps are a common complaint as well as deposits.

We've talked about this tons of times on here.

Only the early direct-inject motors suffered from massive carbon buildup. The next-gen systems have greatly improved this.
 
Best thing to do is to use a low NOACK oil. Such as Pennzoil Ultra. Make sure your PCV valve is good as well. Also good to do an "italian tune up" every now and then.

Italian tune-up does nothing to prevent or undo buildup. If you have an older DI system, you have to clean the IM and valves manually (removal and tanking and/or scraping).

There has been evidence to support heating the valves to in excess of 400 degrees via italian antics. VW allegedly published something about it IIRC.
 
Didn't Audi try to stick the blame for some problems on American owners 'not driving hard enough" as if you CAN in the Northeast.
 
So, am I hearing that the general consensus is that the current
2014 GDI engines will NOT have these issues??
 
I own a 2014 Mazda CX-5 with the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine.
It has direct injection.

I'm not worried about carbon build up on the intake valves during the life of my car.

Why not?

Because over the past 5+ years that mainstream DI cars have been running around loose, Mazdaspeed 3, VW GTI, Porsche Cayman, Audi A4, etc, we have learned that oils with certain properties are less prone to create deposits, along with changing the oil at frequencies that will decrease their concentration of fuel contamination and lower their flashpoint. That, and running the cars harder for a period of time may help decrease any buildup of carbon on those intake valves.

That, and newer DI designs are taking advantage of valve and injection timing to also reduce those carbon deposits that the manufacturers didn't understand about at the beginning of DI's timeline.

My daily driving route, Monday-Friday, is a 10 mile drive in the suburbs of central NJ doing no more that 45MPH with several nights
and moderate stop and go.
With this type of driving, do you think that a GDI engine would NOT
be appropriate? Would a standard port injection be the wiser choice?
Or does it really not matter at all, if I run in out on the highway
every couple of weeks?
If I do go with the the GDI, I would run Pennzoil Ultra and do 7500
mile OCI and use a 89 octane "top tier" gasoline, such as Shell.
(Although I am really not sure if the whole "top tier" gas thing is more of a gimmick.)

So some spirited driving, low NOACK oil should be consideration for GDI engines....
I did two pulls today (30-35mph start, hit WOT & climb up a grade for 2 gears). It shifted right at the redline. All after about a hour highway driving. So things were well warmed up.
Using Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. Ultra getting harder to find.

But officer!... I was doing some cleaning for the intake valves that's recommended.
 
Heh heh you can perform an IT anywhere, you just hold the transmission in a lower gear. The BMWs can hit 70 in 2 about 5K RPM.In 3, it does 105 Run that for an hour and the valves say danke schoen. This was in my first one, It had over 300k on the engine and trans at the time. You are just putting along at 2K RPM normally and they will carbon up if they aren't let out every so often. The engine is just coming on at 3K RPM. In OD, thats 88 MPH
