I wouldn't buy a Chrysler vehicle and hesitate to touch a non-truck Dodge but I hold out hope that Jeep is still making good vehicles that can last as long as maintenance is carefully tended to. I wonder if their current engine can do 200K+ miles like those 4.0 liter I6.

Would you get a new Jeep? As soon as my wife gets a real job out of school, I like to get a new Wrangler or Grand Cherokee.

IMHO no. Once they stopped production of the TJ, I think JEEP as it should be, died.

It's sad. But the new Jeeps are more show than go. Look up part nummbers. A lot of them are the same parts as they put on Chrysler mini vans!

Like the rest of the line up, Mercedes was able to run Jeep into the ground as well. . . .

If you want a great jeep, buy a used TJ with very low miles.

The fact your going to pay the same/or more for a TJ with under 25,000 miles than a brand new 2012 should tell you something.

if anyone really looked under a jeep they'd see that Chrysler has upgraded them tremendously in the last few years.

Better than ever IMO

What is upgraded, for the better, in the new wranglers over the 2006 TJ's???

Looking under a new Jeep, there isn't much Jeep left. For the most part, they are just slightly beefy cars/minivans. The Wrangler is just barely holding on to the final shred of Jeep heritage that's left.

Worse than ever IMO.

The Wranglers have a far more liveable interior. A six speed transmission is availabe (not sure if that was in '06).

As far as off-road capabilities, I'm not sure. If you use it as a daily driver, I think you'd like the new one a lot more.

Chrysler/Jeep hit a huge home run with the 2011 Grand Cherokee. It has won numerous awards since it went on sale last year.

It's built on top of Mercedes' ML chassis and uses a lot of Mercedes technology.

I absolutely love mine

dana 44 solid axles front and rear, with body on frame consruction doesn't sound anything like any minivan i have every seen.

As someone who is (was) around Jeeps all the time, I can tell you that the new JKs are just as capable as TJs, if not more so. They made the interior much more livable compared to any previous Jeep, but off road they are just as good. In fact, they were voted the best stock off-road vehicle by a major off road magazine. Even the Unlimited (4 door). The 3.8L V6 isn't a sophisticated engine (more so than the 4.0L) but is still decently torquey.

Hence why I said the Wrangler is the only Jeep that has any real connection to the brand's heritage. The only thing "Jeep" about the rest of the lineup is the grille.

The Wrangler will be lucky if it survives the next redesign with solid axles. All of the 2wd four door Unlimiteds I see driving around hardly bear any resemblance to an old CJ or even the original Wrangler.

There was a time when every Jeep from the base model Wranglers and Cherokees up to loaded Grand Cherokees and Wagoneers was ready to hit the trail right off the showroom floor. 2WDs were oddities mostly reserved for fleet sales. Those days are long gone.

1999 Cherokee 348,000km.and 2001 TJ 245,000km both run great with basic up-keep (brakes, batteries, shocks, starters etc.)bought both new and still use them both for hunting/hauling no problem!

1996 Jeep Wrangler TJ all the way :P Honestly if you look at the prices of older jeeps you will see people want them and people selling them know that.

Jeep made a brilliant decision offering the wrangler 4 door. They opened the market to all those folks who want a reasonably practical vehicle yet open and airy.I know 7 women who purchased it once 4 door.

If its first year for the Grand Cherokee I would/wait see with Consumer Reports and maybe read forums with grain of salt too.

I know Chrysler has a bad reputation (especially on this site) but we've been very happy with our Jeep Compass. Coming from a Toyota Matrix, we had some reservations but it's been by far, the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned.

My dad has a new-ish Jeep Wrangler. Most of the time it is towed behind his RV. His only complaint is that it gets roughly the same mpg as the Tundra he had before it and worse mpg than my mom's Mountaineer (and the Mercury has a bigger engine)

The pushrod OHV 3.8 in the current Jeep is as durable as any other domestic V6. Maybe more.

I know how long the original factory brake pads last on a PT Cruiser now:
68,305 miles
Which isn't bad when you consider how many internet postings claim to have only gotten 20,000 miles or less.
But that comes with a caveat....
It must have been 5 minutes to "Cerveza:30" when the brakes were put on mine. Both of the "squealers" were bent flat and would have never made contact with the rotors to warn of their impending metal to metal doom.

All jeeps run the same chrysler/daimler electronics.

I own an 08 grand cherokee, and it's basically a minivan with a good driveline, but typical chrysler electronics glitches (M-class was notorious for electronics problems), a front suspension that looks lock, stock, and barrel like a honda accord, and thin sheet metal. I do off-road mine some, and it DOES have generous suspension travel, but it is not as solid, in my opinion, than previous generations. The hood and one back door have never quite lined up correctly, right off the new car lot. I think the mechanicals will be fine, but am prepared for the same electronic woes that I faced in my aging town and country.

The wrangler still has a lot of its original pedigree, however. The 3.8 is a reliable engine, the frame is SOLID and it WILL walk right up the side of a mountain. It has similar electronics, however it appears better protected, better sealed, and hopefully will handle corrosion and wire rot better than other daimler products, just because it's packaged with more care.

I have owned 2 jeeps and like them for what they are. Keep in mind that the 4.0 ZJs and WJ's (grands gen 1 and 2) had reliable drivelines but nickel-and-dimed folks to death with creappy hvac problems of different sorts, various electronics woes, etc.

The 2011+ GC is a beautiful vehicle for what it is, tho it is complex, no solid axle, and to me is more of a mall crawler. For the money, you start to get a lot of different competition. The chrysler 3.6 should be a remarkable engine and is mated to a solid transmission.

That said, I'll prolly never go for one. I like solid axles, and I do tow--- and 4wd with 4 wheel independent suspension introduces 8 rubber boots that age, crack, and require replacement, bushing wear on all those suspension links, etc.. So.... in my opinion, if y'all are interested in a wrangler, do it, they are great. the other offerings.... meh kinda lukewarm.

also keep in mind, folks buy these things then cry about mpg. The wrangler is FUN and with the manual you can actually get decent mpg... and even when you don't, people tend to fall in love with them and the price at the pump is less of an emotional issue. The grands are more subdued, and if you use the a/c and crawl in traffic you will get less than sticker. 14-16 seems pretty typical real-world, and that's hard on folks. There's a lot of used cherokees out there.

my $0.02. Take it FWIW.

IMO if your looking for a new Wrangler 2012 is the year. Pentastar 3.6 and a WA580 automatic transmission is a major step forward from the 3.8L and the 4 speed AT they had. If you are looking for a maunal tranny then the only change from 2011 to 2012 is the engine. That alone is worth the admission. I think their quality is actually very good and improving. JMO
