is Genuine Honda 10w-30 oil for small engines a conventional or a Synthetic?

Conventional is my guess also. Lowe's states as much, but I don't 100% trust their info.

I have a new Honda Versatool power head I'm going to fire up for the first time tomorrow. For oil, the cheapest 10W-30 conventional I could find: Valvoline Maxlife.

“……a unique blend of costly shear-stable polymer additives with top quality base stocks……..”

Does that make it a conventional, semi-syn, or full synthetic?

or a Semi-synthetic?
Don't know and don't care. I've been running all Honda powered equipment on synthetic PCMO for over 25 years. This includes two GGCV-160's and one GSV-190. Similarly I have four Honda pattern Chinese engines (aka Chondas) that have seen nothing by synthecic PCMA or HDEO. The oldest Honda has over 500 hours. The only Chonda with an hour meter is sitting at 80 hours. I cannot think of an additive that a modern small air cooled engine might need above and beyond what current generation PCMO and HDEO offer. I've seen Kawasaki 10w-40 with claims of higher zinc on the packaging, but I am not sure that this is really necessary.

Agree. I toyed with heavy duty diesel oils for a spell but have found that 10-30 synthetic or 5-40 euro synthetics did fine and simply haven’t had oil related issues. I avoid 5-30 after having issues with that in a Honda push mower which saw difficult use and high temps.

10-30 penzoil or 10-30 M1 is what goes in mine.

Their claims under "Formulated To Meet Unique Needs" talking about today's high revving 4 stroke engines - yeah, right.. basically all 4 stroke engines in power equipment, save for weed eaters and blowers will be limited to 3600 rpm or less, unless I'm missing something..
Exactly right. I'm getting less and less patient with ad copy the older I get, especially when it's on the label of something I've already purchased.

Yeah it's all marketing. Just like the Kawasaki oil that claims to have "the high zinc your engine needs" but actually doesn't need, to appeal to all the internet fanboys.

Keep it full, and keep it relatively clean, and the engine will outlast what it is bolted to.

I'd add to that, maintain or replace the air filter as needed to keep dust out so as to not destroy the bore and cause massive oil consumption.

I’m not sure why the worry about whether a premium oil is warranted or not. Each of us can run whatever we like as long as the oil meets the minimum standards required!! No one should judge what anyone wants to use/pay either. What we should focus on is that the generator or water pump or other emergency equipment needs to be maintained to a higher standard than the minimum. These tools are generally used in emergency situations and during those incidents are usually relied upon for the very purpose of safety or survival. So once you have a maintenance plan figured out….stock up on a case of your favourite oil, several spark plugs, spare drain plug, air filters etc. Now you’re ready for a month or two of running if the #%€¥ hits the fan ….🥴
