AMSOIL is a good oil, no need for A-Rx really.

AMSOIL is a very good oil, nothing wrong with it. Problem is, it must be ordered (cant walk into a store and buy it.) Other than that, its a respected and sought-after oil, particularly in engines that can use a high performance oil. So is Redline. They are both very very good.

You can use it as a cleaning oil, im sure that extended drain cleans too! now, is it the BEST one? .. well, off the top of my head, other oils clean "better," but AMSOIL is still good, and likely still cleans.

i could be wrong, but it may not be the "best clean-out oil" (there are usual suspects for that) but its not a bad oil, and im sure it will clean. no sir, yessir.

Please name these stores and where they are, thank you. Its entirely possible i missed something, but i always thought AMSOIL was just like Redline.. it comes in the mail? (Their website likes to post that they got to who they are by turning down Walmart so i always made "mental note: Its not in stores, its sold direct.") Again, nothing wrong with AMSOIL we are just talking about availability and how to get it now.

I can get ROYAL PURPLE pretty easy, but im the only one that likes ROYAL PURPLE.

I also saw AMSOIL XL 10W-30 at my mechanic, but he isnt a store.

Is it available at any MAIN store? Everything i read AMSOIL says its not.

I summon Pablo.

While it may be available in a couple of areas, I also have never seen it at a store. It certainly isnt readily available store-wise. For most people this would be the case.

I am not really looking for it to magically clean everything out. I asked because I dont want a lot of junk dislodged into the filter and plugging it up during the 10k planned OCI. One car I will be doing this on is an Olds Alero 2.4L, and as I understand it, the Alero filters do not have a bypass in it and that could lead to low oil pressure if the filter gets plugged, correct?

I think I will play it safe and do a filter change at 5k to see how it is doing.

Then there would be a bypass in the engine per GM SOP.

Sounds like a wise move.

I have never used Amsoil, so I am stating my opinion based upon the reading that I have done.
The only way that I can see a need for "cleaning" a engine, run on a high quality oil, is if there is something wrong with the engine or if it is run too long.
In the OP's case, it sounds like the oil change interval with "regular" oil was reasonable unless there was something wrong with the engine (no indication of that) or if there is a LOT of short trip driving, or if it takes him forever to get the miles on to his OCI.

Some "light" deposits are not unusual in many engines that have been run on many oils at around a 5K mile OCI, particularly without a lot of highway miles in there.

If he wants to use Amoil Signature Series, I would think that using it for a shorter OCI (like 5K) the first couple times and then extending the OCI (if he chooses) after that.
BEST would be taking a sample and sending it in for testing at 7K and see how it is doing.

Pablo should know better than I, but the extended OCI for Amsoil is dependant upon driving conditions and also time.
If it takes a person 2 years to go 25K....maybe a 25K OCI is not the best idea for them.
But then, that is my reason for recommending that the oil be tested to see how it is holding up in the specific application.

As for the filter....the OP's vehicle surely has the pressure bypass in the block if not in the filter.
Some GMs do have it in the block.
