That is a bit of a stretch.
For sure, change the filter about halfway through. That will help remove acids and other contaminants.
I'm thinking if your driving is fairly moderate, no extended full throttle runs, no trailer or mountains you could go 20,000 max with filter change at 10,000 and top off the oil. Synthetics are less likely to break down due to heat, but the 20,000 is more than I would recommend.
I have a diesel that requires 6 quarts so it can get expensive. I have been using Rotella from Shell in gallon containers, changing every 10,0000 miles.
I am currently investigating Peak brand. It is listed as full synthetic and often is available at $3.99 per quart.
