Is 192 a high VI?

Was looking at an oil with a Viscosity Index of 192. Is that high? Is that good? What is a "low" VI? And what does it matter, for optimal oils and comparisons? Thanks!

Yes that is relatively high. Most 5w30s oils have a VI of 150-175ish. 5w-20s are usually a little lower due to less VII. It really depends on the weight of the oil.

Agree, 192 is relatively high for most grades.

There are/were 0w20s with VIs over 200, but those are becoming more scarce.

Is it good for a 0W-40? I ask because I am thinking of going 0W-40 or GC 0w30 for the Volvo, yes, year round.. and one has a VI of 192, GC doesn't but is otherwise perfect..

A 192 VI is high, and yes it is a positive attribute of an oil. But what's more important is how much of that virgin VI is retained in service. If the high VI is acheived with high molecular weight shear prone polymer thickers as is the case with many 5W-50 oils, the actual in service VI may only be in the 170s.

Don't keep it a secret, what's the oil with the high 192 VI?

Yes, inquiring minds want to know.

How much do the ow-20's shear? Like the Mazda?
