Well, keep in mind there is a commitment to a 30 dollar a month data plan for two years. So really it's 820 bucks if that adds no value to you.

I bought mine used from a friend, I really love it. I have wifi at home and work, and a 1.2gb gps program installed on it, so the only thing I'm really missing without the data plan is streaming music in my car.

If you use your phone mostly as a phone, then the iPhone's battery life is a big minus. That's the one and only thing that's keeping me from buying one.

If you're comparing it to other smartphones, though, then you're probably right.

Yup. Also, iphone is great for general web browsing, but as a business tool, I still prefer Blackberry.

Dang, you're right. Should have accounted for that in my previous post.

I had a Blackberry before my Nokia flip phone. It was great.

$30 per month for the data plan (mandatory)
$20 unlimited texting per month per phone or $30 unlimited texting under the family plan if you have more than one of them in your family.
Plus your phone's talk plan.

yeah, it's costs somewhat more than other phones, but once you have one you realize how these little devices can nearly replace laptops & desktops in many cases.

Come to think of it, i don't recall ever seeing anyone actually TALKING on their iPhone.

VoIP quality on an iphone is rather [censored] from my experience. But it probably has less to do with the iphone itself, and more to do with the quality of the underlying network.

It is silly IMO to buy the iPhone 3G for $99 when you can purchase the 3GS for $199. Regardless of which iPhone you buy, you're going to have to pay $30/mo for the data, so you may as well spend the extra $100 upfront and get substantially faster data speeds.

With that said, I recently purchased a Blackberry 8900. The iPhone's large screen is too susceptible to damage.

I disagree. I sold my ipod for $99,which covered the cost of the $99 iphone. When you look at the differences between the 3G and 3GS, it's not worth $100 more. The 3G has all I would ever need and want so I disagree with your little assessment there Critic.

Blackberries are great. Wife has one but she loves my iphone. It's the best phone I've used.

Although 3gs is a bit faster in all aspects (especially with applications), the big difference is the gps. The 3gs will zero in precisely where you are and give you an address and show you the direction you are going. It also gives lat and long. Google maps on the 3gs is just amazing. And street view is unbelievably fast. To me the gps aspect alone is worth the price difference. There are lots of other little things such as the voice control to choose music or make calls that the 3gs has, but the GPS is the big change IMO. If gps is not a big deal, then it is not worth the extra $ IMO.

Regarding the comments on battery life, 3g internet sucks the battery. Put it on 2g to save the battery. Wifi also uses battery but when actually on internet 3g will use the battery about twice as fast as wifi.

I use my original iphone (2g) all the time and only charge it about once a week. It is 2 years old and battery is comparable to when it was new. The secret is to not leave it plugged in all the time. My wife's 3gs uses the battery fast if she is using 3g internet.

The best way to save battery is to jailbreak and install the application "sbsettings". That lets you toggle wifi, 3g, 2g on and off with one touch. Very slick. High brightness and using the speaker to play music also suck the battery. Also note that if you jailbreak you can install "pdanet", which lets your laptop use the iphone as a modem for the internet (you can choose communication method between laptop and phone, wifi or usb).

Regarding memory, expect 600mb per movie and you probably know already that you can pack tons of mp3 songs, audiobooks, and podcasts on there with no trouble.

check out the dynolicious, gas bag, flixster (movies), and localpicks apps. those are all free except dynolicious (which is a gtach for your car). aol radio and similar free apps gives you free unlimited worldwide music that beats the heck out of satellite radio IMO

I agree, but view it as Jack of all trades, master of none.

We bought another 3g, even after the 3gs came out. Didn't have enough compelling reason for paying the extra $100, since we have gps, and could I install the 3.0sw.

The blackberry is faster/better for typing, but mine at least doesn't do as much. The iPhone is nice because it can do everything, even if the keyboard isn't quite as user friendly, the gps sucks battery, etc.

I'm happy with it. I wanted one when it first came out but I held off so instead of spending $500 for a phone, I paid $100 and sold my existing ipod to cover it. 3G is all I need.

I just bought an iPod touch. This thing looks fun! (most) All the fun of the iPhone, without the service contract.

I would return it if you still can. There is a new ipod touch coming out in a month or two, and it's supposed to be a big improvement. Rumors are, it'll have a camera. And of course, with each generation, you either get a price drop or more features at the same price point.
